Death of Col. Charles Marshall Confederate aide to Lee
Col. Charles Marshall, noted Maryland lawyer and Lee’s aide de camp, died at his Baltimore home. Born October 30, 1830, he practiced law in Baltimore from 1852 and joined the Confederate army in 1862, serving as military secretary and the only officer present at Appomattox surrender. His dispatches bear his handwriting and he gained wide fame for his closeness to General Lee. Federal officers once warned, Kill Marshall, and we'll capture Lee.
