Samuel J. Randall Dies in Washington After Long Service
The ninth member of present congress to die, Samuel J. Randall of Pennsylvania, expired in Washington. Known as the Father of the House for his long service, he faced his illness with calm, predicting during the 1888 presidential contest that he would not live to see the next general election. Randall’s death ends a career dating to the Thirty-seventh Congress, marked by a notable push to authorize placing Gen. Grant on the retired list. Also described is a new submarine craft exhibited in Cherbourg named the Goubet, built for a four-man crew with surface and depth speed, powered by electricity and with air storage.

Testing Dye Fastness by Paper and Iron Methods
The New York Journal notes tests for dye fastness. A damped dyed cloth rubbed on clean white paper leaves no stain if the dye is fast. Ironing the cloth between two sheets of paper should also leave no mark. Exposing the cloth covered by thick perforated paper to direct heat for hours should not fade the dye.
