Press Freedom and Government Surveillance in Rumely Case
The 1950 lobbying inquiry of Dr. Edward A. Rumely led to a Supreme Court ruling that he was not guilty because the probe targeted publishing activities. Justice Douglas warned that requiring disclosure of book purchasers threatens the free press, risking widespread surveillance and censorship. The opinion notes that such government pressure could shape reading and speech nationwide.
