Treatment of fabrics and wood with soda salts to reduce flammability
The New York Sun notes that using a twenty percent solution of tougetate of soda in cloth makes it resist flaming by smoldering rather than bursting into flame. Starch is mixed with the solution and phosphate of soda added to tungstate, improving the effect. Wood can be treated similarly but the process is costly and not fully incendiary.

Gas effects on patients reveal secrets under anesthesia
A Philadelphia Call report notes a dentist recalling gas revealing patient secrets when under influence, with a baritone from an opera company singing and an auctioneer warning bids will close. The item also mentions a vast flock of blackbirds two miles long seen from a Pennsylvania railroad train, darkening the sky near New York.
