Masons Plan Annual Banquet and Talk in Denton

Temple Lodge No. 128 will host its annual banquet at the Masonic Hall in Denton next Friday at 7 p.m. Executive Secretary Mrs. William Bauernschmidt of Baltimore City will address members and guests, with Lanance A. Moore catering the dinner and an orchestra providing music. A dance will follow until 1 a.m., toastmaster Elias W. Nuttle will preside, and a ticket committee led by J. Wm. Davis and others from Ridgely Greensboro Preston and Denton handles sales.

Local Athletes to Compete in Interscholastic Meet

High and prep schools receive entries for the University of Maryland Interscholastic Meet set for May 7 at College Park. The day includes 13 track events, a Maryland Interscholastic Association relay, eight county-only events, varsity and freshman competitions, plus tennis and baseball. Entries must reach the University athletic office by May 2 with medals and trophies to awarded for top finishers and scorers.

Gordy Day Expanded Plans For Salisbury Event

A large Gordy Day program in Salisbury on April 23 aims to rival the 1932 Bicentennial in scope. The Gordy for Governor Club invites the Eastern Shore to join a parade with bands and mounted units, followed by massed music, talks, and a reception, with food for thousands and caravans touring the region to extend invitations.

Maryland's Record Is Better in First Quarter of 1938

Maryland reports 57 fewer deaths in January through March 1938 than the same period in 1937, a 38 percent drop. Pedestrian deaths accounted for 70 percent of March fatalities, with drivers themselves causing 13 percent. Most crashes occurred on dry roads between intersections, on clear days, and at night, with Friday seeing the highest death toll. Baltimore City had eight deaths. counties recorded twenty-two. Commissioner Walter R. Rudy notes pedestrians often walk on the shoulder against traffic, and two hit and run cases occurred in March.

Commissioners Refuse Recommendation on Crime Investigator

Caroline County commissioners will take no action on appointing a special crime investigator under the state attorney until the legislature authorizes it. They also capped relief payments, promising no further aid to indigents unless the state reimburses within 30 days, after current funds are exhausted. Judge J Owen Knotts urged curbing crime breeding resorts and gave the grand jury guidance. J Frank Lane said action will await compulsory legislation detailing wages and expenses.

Maryland and Delaware March Weather Review

March 1935 was the mildest in Maryland and Delaware since 1935 with below normal precipitation and little snow. Maryland reported a mean 47.5 degrees from 47 stations, highs to 88 at Cumberland, lows to 9 at Elkton and Fallston, and 2.80 inches of rain. Delaware posted a mean 47.4 across 57 stations, highs to 82 at Bridgeville and Milford, and 2.50 inches of rain.

County Teachers Hold Semi-Annual Meeting

Caroline County Teachers Association held its semi annual meeting at Federalsburg with representation from all but one school. After the banquet T Wilson Cahall spoke as toast master while Irvin Smith led group singing and Mrs Albert Wing accompanied. Frances Hackett sang, Miss Simpson spoke of China and Japan, and roses were presented to Mrs Benjamin C Willis as the meeting closed.

Public Speaking Contest in Caroline High School

An F F A public speaking contest will be held at Caroline High School on Wednesday April 20 1938 at 8 p m to select a regional representative to compete at College Park on April 30 and qualify for the national contest The event involves several region chapters Centreville Sadlersville Church Hill Federalsburg Preston Greensboro and Denton and admission is free The notice invites public attendance and support for the students.
