Farmers urged to follow fire safety during April and May

Farmers planning open field burns and ditch bank clearing in the coming two months are urged to take added precautions. Forester Kenneth J. Seigworth of the University of Maryland Extension Service notes March through May are the most hazardous for forest fires, with brush burning alone causing 144 fires last year. He warns of penalties for negligence under Maryland law and advises burning only after heavy rain, low wind, and high humidity, with neighbors alerted and the scene never left unattended. For guidance, obtain the forestry circular from the State Department of Forestry or University of Maryland.
