Freight Rate Increase Threatens Baltimore Shore Trade

Baltimore business leaders consider moving against the Pennsylvania Railroad to curb its control of Chesapeake Bay boat service. Loss of Shore commerce to Philadelphia has reached about 1 billion dollars since 1900, per W H Logue Jr. The Interstate Commerce Commission is reviewing mileage based freight rates, which could raise Baltimore rates by at least 25 percent while Philadelphia rates stay steady. The Baltimore Association of Commerce opposes the proposal.
