Maryland farmers to get benefit checks from Richmond
About thirty thousand Maryland farmers who joined the 1942 war crop program will now receive USDA benefit checks from Richmond Virginia rather than Washington DC or county offices. The Treasury disbursing office moved to Richmond. Six canneries in the Maryland Delaware vegetable area are authorized to install dehydration equipment or build new plants for military food needs. New Maryland plants include Joan H. Dulaney & Son Fruitland Gibbs & Company Baltimore Phillips Packing Company Cambridge American Stores Company Hurlock and S E W Friel Queenstown. The Delaware plant is Torch Canning Company Milford. Release of spring planting machinery is not frozen. A distribution directive for harvesting machinery will be issued before April 15. County groups are taking orders for 100 million extra bushels of government-owned wheat for livestock feeding, with Maryland farmers able to buy at 1.06 to 1.07 per bushel in Baltimore and Philadelphia. Fertilizer orders shift cuts to 80 pounds minimum, allows starter fertilizer for transplants, bans nitrogen use for field grown cut flowers, and permits mixed strength fertilizers on the same nitrogen basis.
