James Walker a journalist falls for Miss Knight, a stage actress. After a hedonistic courtship fades, she unveils distance and he endures months of longing and rumors until a hospital meeting brings a reconciliation moment. He finally earns a peaceful wedding leave with hope for the future.
Dorothy Malvern, a shy proper young woman in Marlborough flat No 3, becomes the object of Fred Pritchard’s affection after he overhears her singing from the opposite Richmond flats. They exchange gawky misunderstandings, a chance porch meeting, and a growing friendship aided by Dorothy’s aunt. Fred pursues, learns she is engaged to railroad man Foster, and they part. Six years later Fred marries a wealthy widow with two children.
