Battle Hardens on Manila Front and Subic Bay Raid
In wartime memoir excerpts, officers recount limping back into Manila to salvage remnants, oil fires sparked by a junior naval lieutenant, and Filipino collaboration. They describe an open city air raid, haunting harbor scenes, and the personal cost of war as lovers Peggy and Charlotte aid morale. A daring MTB raid at Subic Bay sinks a cruiser, with DeLong and his crew fighting through reefs and blackout darkness, while Bulkeley’s squadron evades friendly fire and grapples with missing comrades and brutal sea battles.
