Origins of Freak Stick and Pill in College Lingo
A Smith College Magazine piece condemns the terms freak stick and pill used against girls not in the “rush” and argues labeling harms reputation. It argues the “rush” fosters vanity, exclusivity, and poor breeding while urging charity and tolerance for those outside it. A separate anecdote recounts 1784 England where a late voter’s plump vote reversed a borough election, delaying closing and electing Sir John Aubrey by 24 votes.
