Ottawa reports William Ball a quartermaster sergeant in the Canadian forestry Corps told Great War Veterans Association headquarters he was beaten and robbed in Bordeaux in 1919 and lost memory of his Canadian home. He later joined the Spanish Foreign Legion and says memory was recovered after an officer struck him with a rifle butt in jail in Refa Morocco. Ball was listed as a deserter and the veterans group searches for him on behalf of his wife in Port Hope Ontario.
Acting Governor Lloyd today revoked a parole issued last June to Ezra Boshears of Ripley county. Boshears has shown defiant behavior including carrying a pistol and resisting arrest after officers sought to arrest him on burglary suspicions. He was convicted in November 1919 of forgery and sentenced to five years.
Judge E J Bean of the state public service commission filed his declaration as a Democratic candidate for the nomination of Judge of Division No 2 of the Supreme Court. He joins five Democrats seeking the nomination, including R F Walker, Wm M Bowker, J T White, and Haywood Scott. Bean has served on the commission since its 1913 establishment and often dissented on corporate rate disputes with cities.
Washington February 2 Congressman John Philip Hill Republican of Maryland urged the house ways and means committee to authorize the sale of light wines and beer and to use the revenue for a soldiers' bonus. He proposed changing the Volstead law to allow 12 percent wines and 4 percent beer in original packages for home use and suggested taxes of 20 cents a gallon on beef and 40 cents a gallon on wine.
A midnight General Strike of about 260000 German railroad workers includes engineers firemen and brakemen disrupting long distance and local passenger and freight traffic. The report from Berlin notes the walkout will halt key operations across the network.
United Press reports six bodies recovered from the H. C. Fricke coal mine wrecked by a gas explosion near Brownsville Pennsylvania. Rescue teams work to recover 21 more miners believed entombed as officials say only about thirty men were employed at the time of the blast.
Washington February 2 United Press reports Second Assistant Postmaster General E. F. Shaughnessy died at Walter Reed Hospital from injuries in the Knickerbocker Theatre disaster. He fought bravely. blood transfusions from soldiers gave a brief rally, but pelvic fracture proved fatal.
Philadelphia reports the National Association of Merchant Tailors reveals cuffless trousers designed to drape over the instep, breaking from belt reliance. Designers explain the new style pairs with suspenders, reviving old fashion logic and a jab at presidential red white and blue accessories.
In Champaign on February 2 Miss Jessie Daniels, a former employee of the Urbana and Champaign Railway Gas and Electric Company, horse whipped F W Bedard the superintendent, in front of company staff. She surrendered to police. no formal charge yet. Daniels says Bedard defamed her name. Daniels had been employed a year ago, then discharged for inefficiency, later rehired and discharged again.
