Broadway theater leased to W W Wilcox

W W Wilcox signs a long term lease for the Broadway Theatre on West Pine street. He plans a rapid renovation to reopen as a daily moving picture house by November 1 with screenings through Associated Producers and First National. He will keep up the high standard of films previously shown and run daily now.

Fire destroys warehouse and adjoining house

A Tuesday afternoon blaze north of the tracks consumed E. L. Morehead’s Silver avenue warehouse. Losses included groceries worth 1100, a 500 truck, and the 700 building, with adjacent Mexican family residence also destroyed. Fire started when a alfalfa loaded truck backfired, water supply hampered by distance. Insurance coverage mentioned.

Sleeper Service Restored On Apache Trail Route

Effective November 1, the two weekly standard sleeper cars on Trains 101 and 102 will run between El Paso and Los Angeles via Globe to serve winter travelers. Sleepers depart Los Angeles and El Paso on Sundays Tuesdays and Fridays and arrive in Globe on Mondays Wednesdays and Saturdays mornings, with return trips the same evenings.

Pioneer Tom Heustis Visits Deming En Route East

Tom Heustis once a local customs inspector, who rode the era around 1885 to 1886, passed through Deming on Tuesday on the way to the Grand Army of the Republic convention. Heustis now lives in Pacific Beach, California, and is remembered by many regional pioneers.

Local Masons Visit Silver City Lodge

Nineteen members of the local Masonic lodge attended a Saturday night meeting at the Silver City lodge where two candidates for the third degree received the work. Over 100 members from nearby lodges were present, making the evening one of the most enjoyable in the state's history.

Two Dallas women Miss Kathrine Cottrell and Miss Margaret Collins traveled toward the coast when Miss Cottrell cut ties with Collins in Deming and decided to continue solo to finish the journey.

Twenty five youths from the Berean and Fidelis classes of the Baptist Sunday School went by car to Canaigre lake northwest of town for a Tuesday evening picnic where they ate and enjoyed several hours of recreation.

Mrs Evelyn Petty, a Deming pioneer, was honored at a West Spruce Street dinner hosted by daughters Mrs A A Porter and Mrs B F Baker for her 89th birthday. About 20 guests, many lifelong friends, recalled Civil War days and Deming history as Myra Petty’s granddaughters decorated the tables with pink and yellow.

Special Services at Methodist Tabernacle in Deming

Next Sunday evening at 8 o'clock the Methodist Tabernacle hosts Rev. Clyde K. Campbell presiding elder of the El Paso district. It is his last visit for the conference year ending October 8. Fire Chief P A Hughes left Deming last night to attend a national chiefs convention in Atlanta with 700 to 800 top fire fighters from across the United States. Hughes plans to support bringing the next year’s fire chiefs meeting to El Paso. On October 7, sixteen California fire chiefs will pass Deming en route to the Atlanta gathering and will visit El Paso for several days hosted by the city fire department.

Loss of crossing watchman prompts safety concern at North Gold crossing

VeTulloss, who served as crossing watchman on North Gold avenue tracks, has left for Yuma Arizona to work for the company. His departure left the crossing without a watchman and a near miss occurred Tuesday when an automobile narrowly avoided being struck by a train.

Officers of the Luna County Telephone Association announced a 10 percent dividend for Tuesday this week. It marks the sixth straight year of paying 10 percent. Dividend checks are at the Deming National Bank for stockholders to collect.

Trickamolican Robbery Hits Barber Shop on Pine Street

Thieves broke into the Tricka molican Barber shop on West Pine Street last Saturday night and stole nearly all the shop tools and a coat. Entry was gained via the back door. no arrests have been made. The burglary was attributed to N. J. Brechhill.

Tomatoes Canning Plant Produces Over 16000 Cans Daily

Joseph E. Lister reports the Ondale canning factory averages more than 16 000 tomato cans daily. Over 3000 cans have already been stored in the warehouse and large deliveries arrive each day. Two carloads of cans were delivered early in the week.

Hanna Carries Luna County In Election Returns

unofficial Luna county totals show Judge Richard H Hanna ahead by 69 votes with 604 to 535 against Senator Holm C Bursum. Gage reports 7 to 6 for Bursum, Hermanas unlikely to change totals. Amendments 7 and 8 fail. others pass with large margins. Overall state results point to a Bursum win near 7000 votes. Political tension noted with armed guards at polling places.

Deming Hosts Veterans Bureau Clean-Up Squad

A two day visit by a veterans bureau clean-up squad in Deming processed over 60 claims for adjustment and benefits. Thirty claims were for compensation or insurance, with other requests including vocational training and multiple appeals to the medical review board. The group also noted cooperative local Red Cross and American Legion support and hosted a social event marking Deming’s opening of the season.
