Governor G A Larrazolo announces a plan to curb high living costs in New Mexico. He urges enforcement of existing laws and proposes consumer committees and direct-from-producer buying clubs to reduce prices, with a possible special legislative session if needed.
Nazimova stars in The Red Lantern a dramatic tale of an Eurasian girl torn by alien bloodlines. Sol Carragien presents the Metro photoplay for one night at Popular Pine Street Playhouse with Nazimova in a dual role praised for artistry and depth.
The Luna County Fair Association finance committee will begin collecting promised subscriptions on Monday. It will call on those who signed the list and asks firms and individuals to have checks ready, made out to the fair association, to speed up the collection.
The Watkina store at Silton, formerly Miese, was robbed Tuesday night. Thieves took tires spark plugs ham bacon canned goods and a shotgun. Sheriff W C Simpson and deputies pursued but the culprits escaped across the Texas line into El Faso. Authorities continue the chase and expect arrests soon.
Jacob P. DeCrocker and Mrs. A. Micars were married Wednesday evening September 10 at the home of G. W. Middleton on Pine Street with Rev. Wm. Sickels of the Presbyterian Church officiating. M. C. G. Boucher and Hill Welle departed this week for oil fields at Gorman, Texas.
A. J. Deckert, a prominent Deming trader, shot himself in the head with an 88 caliber pistol shortly after 8 am. A coroner’s inquest ruled death self-inflicted, citing nervous strain from recent business worries. Deckert leaves a wife, a young son, his parents, and two brothers. Funeral arrangements are pending.
The Missionary society of the Methodist church was entertained by Mesdames Hugg and Snow at a farmer’s residence on September 4. Punch, Scripture reading, prayer, and a business meeting opened the gathering. Dues paid, visitors donated to the treasury, and plans for a November bazaar were discussed as ladies sewed and chatted. Ice cream and cake concluded a pleasant afternoon?
A large Deming luncheon praised by attendees. Dr P M Sived led the table, with songs and a recital by Faye McKeyes, J G Moir, John C Watson, and Frank Nordhaus. A. C. Heyman outlined Luna County Fair progress and plans for community exhibits and prizes.
Report notes strong yields across beans corn maize and cane on multiple local farms east of town. Brems six kind corn towers 11 feet, Nordhaus features 20 acre barley and mile of crops, Hatfield and Case show profitable beans and alfalfa with efficient irrigation. Community optimism centers on water access and farmer effort yielding real money.
Next Tuesday evening September 16 Ruth Chapter No 6 Order of Eastern Star holds its regular meeting followed by a banquet. Members urged to attend. Attorney John C Watson made a business trip to Columbus on Tuesday.
L. L. Hall for the National Exhibitors' Circuit signs a six month contract with W. W. Wilcox manager of the Majestic theatre. Anita Stewart stars in A Midnight Romance to be shown September 18 and 14. The program features Mary Pickford Chaplin and Veber stars with heavy emphasis on big scale productions for Deming audiences.
The evangelistic campaign led by Charles Reiyn Scoville will start on September 16 and run indefinitely. Location for services not decided yet, with plans to settle before opening. Dr Scoville, a veteran evangelist, has served in WWI era camps and M C A Red Cross work and travels with his wife Mrs Scoville who assists with singing and youth outreach.
Many rabbit raisers planning to exhibit at the coming county fair are urged to notify Av HL Thompson, the rabbit man, so organizers can arrange suitable housing and accommodations for exhibitors.
The annual library election in Luna County is set for the first Wednesday in October, with dues required before voting. Committees are collecting subscriptions and recruiting new members to fund operations at the armory location and to expand the library’s offerings for Deming and Lung County residents. Three men James Pickrell Chyle Prout and Benest Perry address listed as from El Paso were arrested west of Gage by Sheriff W C Simpson and Deputy Gavin on a car theft charge. They admitted trading for the vehicle but a judge ordered them held to the grand jury in bonds of 500 dollars each after a preliminary hearing in Deming.
Attorney A. W. Pollard left yesterday for Ranger Texas where he will remain for an indefinite stay to look after business interests and investments.
