Soldiers May Get Refund of 1922 Taxes Paid

Santa Fe reports Assistant Attorney General John W Armstrong explains refunds for 1922 property taxes under the Soldiers Exemption law. Veterans who paid 1922 taxes should apply to the county treasurer with proof of residency and ownership. if denied, they may appeal to district court. Those unpaid or mislisted in 1923 tax rolls follow the same process for exemption.

Missionary Society Secretary Visits Deming

Miss Daisy June Trout secretary of the United Christian Missionary Society spoke at Maple Street Church of Christ on the Golden Jubilee of the Woman's Missionary Society. The event climaxes at the Christian church International Convention in Cleveland in October 1924. A reception followed as Miss Trout continued to El Paso, then east. The Presbyterian Social Circle met with Mrs. Algier on West Pine, planning a December bazaar and cafeteria dinner.

Suburban Club Holds September Meeting at Hudson Home

Manley Miles Weds Miss Leggett Sunday

Manley M Miles, a Warsaw Missouri printer who spent a year in the southwest, married Miss Clarissa Leggett with Rev L Shermer officiating. They will tour Arizona and California by auto. Miles served in the U S Navy during World War II and later worked on The Headlight and The Graphic in Deming.

Woman's Club Reception Highlights Autumn Event

The Monday reception by the Woman's Club at Dr. and Mrs. Moir’s home drew about sixty attendees. Members praised the club’s social role, heard a year-in-review from Mrs. Moir, and celebrated the piano gift from Mr. Nick Cutsaros. Speakers included Mesdames Robinson, Lee, Henry, Sylvanus, Smith, Wiese, Sickles, Bickford, and Miss Marguerite Mosp, with musical numbers by Marguerite, Holt, Stevens, and others. Riley Dixon Captured After Train Robbery in Oklahoma Case

Riley Dixon a 26 year old gang member known as Pug was captured in a Deming New Mexico pool hall by Sheriff Jack Smyer and jailed before transport to Oklahoma City. He admitted identity from tattoo marks but refused to discuss the Okesa raid or gang crimes including the M E T No 123 heist.

Judge Ryan Calls Civil Docket and Grants Naturalization

Judge R R Ryan opened the civil docket on Monday drawing grand and petit jurors with returns set for November Sth and 12th. On Tuesday he heard the naturalization case of John George, a Greek candy store operator on North Silver Avenue, and granted him naturalization papers making him a citizen.

Visit to Hondale Cannery Seeks Year Round Operation

A report from a plant tour with H C Brown J A Vance and J G O Leary shows 2500 cases canned this season and a projected 6000 case yield. The Mimbres Valley Canners Growers Association operates the cannery and trials with canned frijoles suggest possible year round operation if markets develop. The sample beans impressed, described as firm whole and well cooked, rivaling larger canneries. Beans remain the valley’s top crop with abundant supply potential.

Dutcher Opens Free Camp Grounds For Tourists

L Dutcher, operator of a grocery at 116 Second Street, has cleared a lot west of his state building into a free tourist camp. Electric lights and water hydrants are installed with a large sign guiding travelers. He plans a night and day grocery service, supposing the coming demand from travelers will boost his business.

An El Paso item reports Daire, an American citizen, detained by Canal Grandes authorities in connection with the murder of Grover Buck Kornegay on a ranch near Ascension Chile.
