Ten Deming golfers traveled to Silver City on Sunday for a four team tournament at North End Golf Club. El Paso won the event by a small margin over Silver City with Hurley and Deming placing afterward. Individual scores listed include Raymond Johnson and B M Garey among the Deming lineup.
El Paso resident M. G. Pumphrey, camp cook for the Latham ranch, recounts the moment Tom Latham was struck and killed by lightning on Wednesday September 5. Pumphrey details being knocked unconscious, finding Latham dead in the wagon, and signs of the strike on his own hat.
Ed Eller and Amelia Manhard wed last Wednesday with Judge GC C Rogers officiating. Eller, foreman of the 76 Ranch, and Manhard, Hondale postmaster who runs a store, will reside at Trondale.
A benefit dance is held Saturday night October 18 at the Armory with a five piece jazz orchestra playing the latest in dance music. Everyone is invited.
The New Mexico State Board of Nurse Examiners will meet in Santa Fe on November 21, 1923 for compulsory nurse registration requiring all graduates to apply. Secretary Mrs. W. C. Wilson, box 668, Albuquerque. Deputy state veterinarian G. H. Young traveled to Silver City Lordsburg Nachita and Aden to inspect cattle shipments and reported the stock in fine condition.
Deming High School began the 1923 football campaign September 29 with a 11 to 0 loss to Silver City at State Teachers College. Curtis McCann sustained a left arm injury. lineups and early game details are listed. Attendance figures show 163 at the high school, 101 at junior high, with 400 American and 317 Spanish American children enrolled. The district buys a $350 radio funded by classes of 1922 and 1923, and a fall schedule of concerts and lectures is announced through March with tickets available at the high school.
Maples Street Church of Christ invites attendance at services led by Minister J. B. Brown. Bible school at 9:45 with classes and literature for all ages. Communion and preaching at 11. sermon “Treason Against God.” Junior Endeavor 6:30. Intermediate and Senior Endeavors 7:30. worship and sermon “Preparedness.” Wednesday prayer meeting and Bible study at 7:30.

Louise Daniel’s funeral was held Monday at 3 p m with prayers and scripture, and her volunteer mission work noted. Miss Ann Chase of El Paso to wed Fred Wilson of El Paso October 6 with Katherine Wamel as bridesmaid.
Oil trail at Angelus well shows progress as water flow ceased after nine cementing attempts by Clinton and Almy. Report notes stubborn water block hindered oil prospects, with cementing depth and pressure tests ongoing and a hopeful outlook for future oil shows.
The Woman's Club outlines a year beginning with an Oct reception at Mrs J G Moly's home. It lists arrangements and refreshment committees, monthly meetings on the first and third Mondays, and a slate of topics and speakers from Nov to May including Japan France Egypt India Washington DC and domestic science.
Drilling at the Florida well halted after the bit was recovered and sent to El Paso for repairs. Workers splice cable and prepare to resume once the bit returns, with depth around 1965 feet and blue shale–like formation. Oil and gas showings remain encouraging.
Mr. A. M. Gildea received a letter from G. W. Saunders of San Antonio announcing the Old Trail Drivers reunion has been postponed to November 2. Saunders urges all to spread the word that a grand time is anticipated.
An all day Saturday October 13 1923 reunion in Sycamore Grove Park Los Angeles invites former residents of Nevada Arizona and New Mexico plus those who lived in two or three of these states. Bring basket dinners coffee provided. County registers for each state available at Continental National Bank Ninth and Main Streets.
