After two years in Deming, Mahan steps down from his position in local schools to take a new role in Greenville Indiana. The transfer ends his two year assignment and places him in a different school administration setting.
Prof M S Mahan resigns as superintendent of Deming schools effective end of term. He will move to Indiana to become superintendent of Greenfield schools, aims to raise standards and expand curriculum. He cites army camp influx, Truancy issues, and staffing as past challenges, noting salary boosts and improved grounds and harmony between faculty and students.

Diplomas awarded by Prof M S Mahan. all graduates passed exams. Employment service reports 4,557,259 actual placements and 6,975,290 opportunities over 16 months.
Reports to the United States Employment Service show growing demand for farm labor across the Northwest Midwest South and Southwest and the Pacific coast as the season advances. Farm labor shortage escalates as labor demand increases with progressing season.
Dr. David Ross Boyd former University of New Mexico president spoke at the Majestic Theatre on the Next Quarter of a Century. He urged balance between outer material life and inner spiritual development, warning that true progress comes from training the will and thoughts.
John J. Noonan receives a letter from his son James J. Noonan now in Germany with the 6th division signal corps in the army of occupation. He has been there several months and expects to return home soon. He was laid up for three weeks after an auto wreck, but otherwise has had no major injuries in the war. James formerly lived in Deming with his father and worked in the Western Transfer business.
Ligant Sam Lindauer is visiting his father in Deming and awaiting his brother Herman Lindauer’s return from overseas within days. He will later go to California to resume work with a banking house and join the Navy reserve. He previously sought Army service but was rejected for eyesight. He served in Washington on food administration duties and was named chief cable tensor, gaining close contact with European events. He read the terms of Austria’s ceasefire and the German surrender. He praises Senator A. A. Jones in Washington and critiques Senator Fall as aligned with vested interests concerning Mexico.
The War Camp Community Service announces ex service man F M Jamson will speak this evening to soldiers and sailors honored at the Welcome Home party at the armory. He is joined by a ginger who will lead the community singing.
The Drillers and Producers Oil Co of Wichita Falls Texas will be represented in Deming by H Dial manager of the Deming Oil Exchange appointed this week by George W Avery secretary of the company. The firm holds 18 Td acres in a proven Texas field and has several standard ships ready to operate on others property netting a steady income and boosting its Southwest position. Ips stock is selling at 2 50 a share up from 71.
The Democratic state central committee draws a schedule for February 4th and 5th in Albuquerque. The program includes meetings at Crystal theatre and Commercial club, addresses by C N More ron, W R Halisters, R il Hanna, Mrs Gee, Bass, W J Cochran and IL 8 Cummings, a luncheon for Mrs Geo Bass, and a 2:40 PM conference with national and county organizations followed by a banquet for H S Cummings with A A Jones presiding.
Local stores will be closed today in honor of Decoration Day and banks will also be closed for the holiday. The observance affects business hours across the area with partial closures noted.
A reception for soldiers and sailors at the armory is planned as a big affair with Hamilton addressing the men from Lunaco. The event aims to honor service members and boost morale.
Deming plans a large 1919 Decoration Day celebration featuring a Welcome Home address by Mayor R F Hamilton, a War Camp Community Service speaker, an augmented orchestra, patriotic tableaux tracing state history, and a Liberty tableau. Faye McKeyes will recite Your Flags and My Flag. supper and dancing follow in the armory basement with lessons from the eighth grade dance troupe. The Red Cross salvaging funds via tin foil and other donations, with future entertainments planned for returning soldiers as they arrive.
The educational board announces a six week summer school starting Monday for pupils who failed grades. Teachers Miss Lucile Holt and Miss Maria Stevens will instruct, with another to be named. Tuition is 8 dollars for grammar grades and 10 dollars for the fifth school. Home study is encouraged and travel to Riverside and Los Angeles is noted for a later trip by Capt. and Mrs. H. G. Bush and Ed Gotten.
