Famous Traveller Powell Visits Deming for New Mexico Study

E Alexander Powell, famed African traveler and former U S consul in Turkey, toured Deming this week gathering data for Sunset Magazine on New Mexico and the Southwest. He praised the valley’s agricultural resources and compared local development to Egypt, predicting pumps will reclaim the Sahara in this generation.

New Mexico Implement Co extends shop in Deming for pumps engines

The New Mexico Implement Company near Deming extends its shop and warehouse to offer a full line of farming implements, engines, and pumps. It is state agent for Fairbanks Morse and Layne Bowler pumps, introduces a perforating machine for well screens, and will assemble Layne Bowler pumps on site. A yard irrigation well will test engines and motors, enhancing local employment and reducing freight by shipping parts only.

The church was filled to overflowing and the audience gave close attention. The same lectured was recently given before the Texas State Medical Association in San Antonio.

Frank E. Monser Severely Scalded At Plant Hazard

Frank E. Monser, manager of the Deminng Ire and Electric Co., stepped on a loose board covering a blow-off pipe on Wednesday. The boilers had finished blowing off and the tank below was full of hot water and steam, scalding his legs. He received treatment at the Ladies' Hospital and will remain in bed for about ten days.

Heralds of Liberty Reports Rapid Growth in New Division

R C Howard grand state organizer reports a Philadelphia home office telegram stating over one million dollars of business written for the new division opened May 15 in ten days. Many division members reside in Deming and hope to be paid off soon.

J C Steinemann Loses Laundry Fire Ruins New Deming Plant

A gasoline explosion sparked a blaze destroying the New Deming Steam Laundry on Tuesday. Employee Nestor Chavez suffered severe facial and upper body burns while Dr E A Monten vohl aided the victim and rushed him to hospital. Fire crews faced delays as the nearest hydrant was at Silver and Railroad, delaying water flow for about 30 minutes. The plant valued at 10000 dollars was only partially insured.

Father and Eight Sons to Settle on Miesse Tract

John W. Slusser of Putnam County Ohio with eight sons will move to 160 acres bought from Alfalfa Farms Co. The same company sold eighty acres to T M Graves of Boone County Illinois, and forty acres each to Henry D Rebuck Geo G Myers of Ogle County. Grant Armstrong of Pontiac Ill accompanied C E Miesse in April to select lands for nephew Orland I Elia and brother A W Armstrong both of Livingston County Illinois. Armstrong also selected forty acres for Jos G Slagel of Livingston County Illinois. Construction on the tract is progressing rapidly.

Big Cattle Shipments Hit Mimbres Valley Markets

Mimbres Valley cattle sales topped $300000 as 1000 train cars were counted since April 26 at Deming. Most cattle passed through from Mexico and Arizona before Santa Fe and other lines, with over 16000 head from Mimbres Valley ranches. Hyatt ranch north of Cook's Peak noted among hill outfits. Demonstration Farm near Spalding reports progress on Rio Mimbres Irrigation tract with 60 workers, alfalfa prospects, a 60 hp engine, and a 4 mile flood ditch under construction.

Lew L. Smucker managing editor of the Arizona Star died of heart failure aboard a train near Bowie while returning to Tucson from Indian Hot Springs. T. J. Clark to Have Watermelons by July 4

T. J. Clark previously planted string beans in his yard behind the Sunset hotel. The beans measure three to four inches with muskmelons and cantaloupes blooming. He expects watermelons ready to eat by July 4 as the Sunset hotel receives a new coat of paint and extensive overhauling.

New restaurant to replace Black Cat in Deming

Mrs. W. G. Mangan of Tucson, Arizona arrives to open a restaurant and cafe in the former Black Cat site. She has hotel experience in Tucson and Sherman, Texas, built houses there, and was active in the Maccabees in Arizona. Her husband, vice president of Boilermakers Union district 23, will join about June 20. Meanwhile Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co works rush to install new system with Pillaud aiming for early cut over. weather and other factors may alter dates.

Shirtwaist Dance at the Harvey House

Mr and Mrs Loren Pritchett invite about two hundred guests to a shirtwaist dance at the Harvey House tonight. The hotel dining room will be used for dancing with an awning around part of the platform and refreshments served outside. Prominent officials from Southern Pacific and Santa Fe are expected to attend. Under Mr Pritchett’s management, the event is seen as a guaranteed success.

Outside Markets Sought By Valley Farmers Association

A Saturday meeting of the Mimbres Valley Farmers Association board at the State Bank approved a plan to contact marketing points for profitable markets and to gather crop and marketing data from stockholders. Reports note postmaster W E Foulks and US marshal Andrew H Hudsteth confirmed, and A A Jones named assistant secretary of the interior. engineer H L Keely severely burned by a boiler leak, with Dr Hoffman aiding his recovery after hospital confinement.

Hugh H. Williams of the State Corporation Commission travels to Washington to press New Mexico freight rate concerns with the Interstate Commerce Commission, but ICC members cannot attend hearings before the summer recess. Attorney H. H. Cowan says he will prepare a concise case and call a few well-informed merchants as witnesses, outlining expected testimony in a memorandum.
