Santa Fe June 28 Governor Hinkle granted a commutation to A B Smith alias Dashley who was sentenced to hang for first degree murder in the killing of Luna county Sheriff Stephens during the Deming jail escape seven years ago His appeal to the Supreme Court failed and the state court affirmed the sentence with a recommendation for clemency Jesse O Starr also had his death sentence commuted while another participant received life imprisonment and a further man was acquitted
