City Delays Power Plant Purchase to Save Costs

The city council, facing a Deming Ice & Electric Co. rate increase, weighed buying a power plant to supply water works and street lighting. After negotiations, the company offered to drop the service charge and reduce rates to 7.44 cents per kilowatt, prompting the council to trial the arrangement for a few months. The planned equipment purchase, worth about $25,000, was deferred, saving 25 percent compared with past prices and aligning with public interests. A 35-hp Fairbanks-Morse booster marine was also ordered, leaving the water department with two boosters for emergencies.
