On Decoration Day evening May 30 plans are ready for the Welcome to Luna's Troops event at the armory. Stirring scenes are anticipated as preparations conclude for the ceremony and public gathering.
Local volunteers coordinate plans for a Welcome Home event for soldiers and sailors from Lure county. committees handle reception, refreshments, decorations, entertainment, invitations, and communications with the Wee Gump Community Service assisting. expected May 30 at the armory with speakers, a band, and a large countywide turnout. Donald McAdams has arrived in the U S and will discharge soon at Fort Bliss before home leave.
Dr. Mark Risley of Risley & Lucas will depart Monday for Texas oil fields to assess conditions and the connections he has made in oil brokerage. He will then travel to Arkansas to visit his painter, whom he has not seen in 33 years, returning to Deming in about three weeks with news for clients. A lawn fete for Deming ladies will be held at Mrs. Charles Gage’s Granite avenue home on June 1 with music and refreshments, kept largely private for now.
Washington report details the Alien Property Custodian under A Mitchell Palmer from October 1917 to February 1919. It covers 32 296 trusts with value over 502 million dollars and an expected total enemy property worth about 700 million dollars, plus taxes collected of 1.63 million dollars. It notes wartime production aided by seized enemy firms and outlines proposed reimbursement of foreign and domestic claimants through offsetting and government funds.
Charles M. Gorton returns from California where he was on business and plans to leave Monday for explorations through several Texas oil fields.
Captain C. E. Ely earns praise from troops as men are brought home for discharge. Former Dewing man leads with steady command amid demobilization efforts and returns to civilian life.
Capt Clyde Earl Bly a former editor and premier of Denning s national guard company led the 145th machine gun battalion back to the Presidio San Francisco for discharge on a troop train. Capt Ely acting major expected a return to Denning for vacation but may remain in the army after being recommended for majority. The train stopped near Deming for a rest and the men praised Ely for his leadership and support.
W T Reeder of Sharpnack & Co the El Paso underwriters, visited Deming this week and appointed I Dial manager of the Deming Oil Exchange as local agent. Dial will handle all Sharpnack business here. Reorganization plans merge Davie Oil & Refining Co and Comanche County City into a new entity with a planned 10 percent return and self-contained operations including a bank, refinery, and pipelines. New company aims at major Southwest status, with Texas oil men guiding it. Sharpnack has sed large New Mexico tracts and associates with capitanes to underwrite stock while examining all business aspects. The exchange will keep customers informed, and Dr H W Armstrong visited Deming Wednesday to see a former patient.
The Deming public schools present a broad exhibit at the armory showcasing work from all grades and departments. Notable pieces include two china painting displays by Ita Tinnin’s art class, pieces by Lew Fon and John Deckard, and letters exchanged between TA and TB grades and Lincoln High School students. Manual training, domestic science, sewing, and commercial work reflect diligent teaching. the Lowell and Luxor schools contribute varied projects. The display runs through this evening with student guides on hand to explain the exhibits.
German delegates at Versailles have been notified they may sign the peace treaty by May 20. Many German leaders show a disposition to refuse the pact, in which case the Allies plan to advance into Germany.
The first stockholders meeting elected directors B. Y. McKeyes E. F. Burgett H. Parsons Ralph A. Lynch with Judge McKeyes named president and Parsons Burcett as top officers. The firm controls 40 acres near Deming viewed as a definite oil formation by a geologist from a major Southwest company.
A senior play promises laughs with a large cast including tones Albert Dryer Ebenezer Goodly and Roy Osborn. Miss Seymour organized the event with junior loaners due to a seniors shortage. Tickets are 4 cents for reserved seats and 6 cents for the rest. show date May 23 at the Majestic.
The War Camp Community Service hosted a Thursday picnic for high school girls and boys from the W. C. S. dancing class. Trucks transported attendees to Russell's Grove where a weenie supper and games followed under the supervision of chaperones Mien Helen Halt, Ruth Merrill, and Edith Stone.
The graduating class stages the play What Happened to Jones at the Majestic tonight as part of commencement events. Rehearsals have been daily, with Rev Norris J Reasoner delivering the baccalaureate sermon Sunday morning at the Majestic theater alongside local clergy. Dr David Ross Boyd of the University of New Mexico will speak next Wednesday. his address is a highlight of the exercises.
E R Veltandighem president of the Deming Oil, Gas and Development Co. will travel Saturday through Arizona and California in the interests of his company and expects to return within the next few years.
Tony Wyerts, chief engineer at the Deming Ive & Electric Co., has purchased the 804 West Pine Street residence and will occupy it with his family.
The suffrage amendment resolution passed the U S House of Representatives on Wednesday by a 04 to 88 vote after a brief debate. It moves to the Senate where leaders predict swift action and a prompt final vote within about two weeks.
Australian aviator Harry Hawker who began a trans Atlantic bid earlier in the week is believed to have died when his plane was forced to abandon the High. The British Admiralty faced sharp criticism for failing to supply Hawker with proper geological data to guide Nim, the NC4, the American craft that completed the Azores flight, which has been overhauled and was expected to continue to Portugal yesterday.
United States employment service in Washington D C says placements averaged over 10 000 daily during one week in April with 14 925 job seekers applying to the service. Of those referred to vacancies 62 823 informed the service or employers they were placed and 20 percent of placed workers were soldiers. Overseas soldiers request openings for their return are being received at the service office.
