Copper Mines Set for Quick Restart Says Mine Authority

Charles F. Willis editor of the Arizona Mining Journal predicts copper production and markets normalize within six months. He cites cost cuts, higher prices, and supply demand adjustments as drivers, noting past war peaks, surplus stock, and plans to reduce operations to restore price and output while exploring new copper products and Arizona as a manufacturing center.

Miss Wamel Students Shine In School Recital

Miss Katherine Wamel led a high school recital by her music pupils last Saturday afternoon. The program featured violin and piano pieces by Holst, Chaminade, Kreutzer, and others, performed by Neale Somerville, Susan Calkins, Trixie Chaves, Lois McRonalds, James Austin, Efty May Miller, Dorothy Baker, and Wandra Pollard. Guests enjoyed refreshments after the performance.

Little Girl Drowns In Keg of Water

Bernice Green missing for hours found dead in a small keg of water in the front yard. The two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J A Green of 319 West Spruce street. Funeral services held Wednesday afternoon with burial in the local cemetery. Community extends sympathy to the bereaved family.

Redmond Co. Again Saturday and Sunday

A large crowd in Deming enjoyed Ed Redmond's comedy troupe on Sunday with a reduced chorus due to a cold epidemic. The performance of Why Grow Old sparkled, and the dancing and singing impressed despite the illness. J. Redmond says the company returns next Saturday and Sunday with a full chorus assured.

Red Cross seeks women volunteers for Europe garments

Luna County Chapter Red Cross calls for women to sew monthly garments for destitute European children cared for by the American Red Cross. Interested volunteers should give their names to Mrs. Almy at the chamber of commerce.

Baccalaureate Services Placed For Deming High Seniors

The Baptist Tabernacle will host the baccalaureate service next Sunday at 11 p m linked to Deming High School graduation exercises. Rev J H Walker will deliver the sermon Life and Its Ideal with music from the High School Chorus and Girls Sextette. Also listed are readings, prayers, and selections by the Deming Male Quartette and violinists, leading to the Class Day on May 25 and commencement on May 27 at the Majestic Theatre.

Good News From No 1 Angelus Expected Soon

The Angelus No 2 well 23 miles north of town is temporarily suspended awaiting casing arrival. Attention shifts to the marginal well eight miles south of Myndus where drilling continues briskly and artesian water flow remains unobtrusive. Drilling aims for oil production within near 2000 feet.

Masons Have Big Time at Silver City

Delegations of Masons from across the state gathered in Silver City for the thirty sixth annual Scottish Rite reunion and a ceremonial session of the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. A 25 member degree team from Ballot Thyad Temple Albuquerque led by Col John W Borrodaie drove a class of 45 novices. a parade drew the town crowd two blocks long. D Snodgress led 22 Deming harriers and a large attendance joined the event.

Seniors Banquet for High School Play Cast

A Thursday night event at Manhattan cafe honored the cast of The Hurdy Gurdy Girl. Twenty six were seated with pink and white carnation decor. Menu featured fruit cocktail salad baked chicken with English dressing olives potatoes au gratin creamed egosragus tonet and apple a la mode tea and coffee. Attendees included B. W. Wheatley D. A. Child Born to Quigleys Dies Hours After Birth

A newborn infant, only a few hours old, died early Tuesday. The child was born to Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Quigley of 200 South Granite Avenue. Mrs. Quigley had been in precarious condition for several days but was reported better today.

County Hospital to Close After June 1

County commissioners meet at the courthouse and decide to discontinue the county hospital after June 1 due to funding issues. A county farm agent will be added to teach agriculture at the high school. Outdated road equipment is to be sold for junk. Luna county seeks reimbursement on old railroad bonds. A detour route west over Borderland is advised to avoid poor road conditions along the main line.

Former Deming people in Mesa report good health and business

E. R. Vallandigham returned from a business trip to Tucson Phoenix and Mesa Ariz and found former Demingites thriving. They note cotton prices slumped yet overall income remains solid as farmers cut cotton acreage to about half and focus on cantaloupes alfalfa smaller grains and dairy cattle. Distress in Salt River valley is overstated by critics who have not learned the facts.

Memorial Day Plans in Deming Previewed at Armory

Arrangements are under way in Deming for a Memorial Day celebration to be announced next week. The program will be held at the armory Tuesday afternoon on May 40 at 3 o clock. Mas Tarwater and Eugene Connolly were bound over to await grand jury action on counts of possessing beef without the hide and refusing to surrender the hide when asked.

Majority of This Year’s Teachers to Return

Superintendent Martin has not announced all new hires, but it is understood that most current teachers will return with F S Trine of Los Angeles taking science and athletics. Trine is a Redlands University graduate and noted athlete who played on champion baseball, football, and basketball teams. Lola Anderson of Dallas Ia, a University of Missouri graduate, will teach reading in the Junior High.

Victim of Shooting Affray to Be Buried Here This Afternoon

Robert Harrington prominent New Mexico cattleman died at Hotel Dieu in El Paso after a shooting affray at Noria twenty miles west of El Paso. His body was brought to Deming for burial this afternoon under the Odd Fellows order. The incident followed a dispute over a dog chasing cattle. Ramírez and son Gallo fired on Harrington, who returned fire killing Ramírez senior and Gallo was shot in the back. Harrington, a Texas native, had moved to the Deming area after a cattle career near the Texas line lasting many years.

Tourist Camp Erected At Poplar And Gold

County commissioners order an adobe tourist camp on the courthouse block with toilets baths wash houses ovens and shelters. Grounds will be lit with free water and convenient walks. Located rear block with entrances from Poplar and Gold avenue this site aims to advertise Dering and hospitality. Chamber of commerce to register tourists and provide literature on the area.

Mabel Steed Wins Declamatory Contest at High School

The Wednesday night event in the high school auditorium drew a crowd for a lively declamation contest. Mabel Steed won first prize of 3 dollars with At the Matinee, Maurice Creary took second with A Plea for Prohibition, and Frank McCarty earned 1 dollar for Resistance to Oppression. Unplaced were Mary Burr with Aunt Eleanor's Hero and A Bletcher with A Hero of the Furnace Room. Judges praised strong efforts and close averages.

Indiana High Play Promises a Colorful Historic Pageant

Junior High presents the operetta The Indiana under Miss Stevens and Harris with a playful cast list including Captain Smith Wilbert Scott Pocahontas Indian Maid Helena Barrow and Pocahontas as well as a long roster of students in roles. Following the performance, eighth and ninth graders receive diplomas and class promotion exercises conclude the program.

Fort Bayard to Host Meni Day Celebration

Fort Bayard will host a large Meni Day celebration on Monday May 20 with a turnout from Public Health Service Hospital No. 6 and veterans groups. Hurdy Gurdy Girl thrills Deming High School audience

A large crowd filled the Majestic theatre last Friday evening to see Deming High School perform The Hurdy Gurdy Girl. The cast showed assurance and poise beyond their years, with special praise for Corona Sharlock's dancing and finale, and the Deming Orchestra received enthusiastic appreciation.
