Pioneer Deming resident Martha Stevens dies at 105

Martha Ivebe Stevens died at her home in Deming on May 12. Funeral held Tuesday at 3 PM from Poloeypal church. Born May 11, 1840 in La Porte Indiana, she came to New Mexico in 1807 settling at Whitewater then Deming in 1900 and bought the tank hotel. Survived by son W B Stevens and four grandchildren. Funeral attended by many old timers who knew her for nearly a quarter century.

Holy Cross Sanatorium Opens Near Deming

The Holy Cross Sanatorium near Deming, three miles northwest on former Camp Cody land, opened with a 10 am reception and a public open house at 3 pm. Attendees included Mayor R. F. Hamilton and Bishop Schuler. the facility showcases a large administration building, patient units, modern fire safety, heating and power plants, a dairy herd, and a Nurses Training School.

Senior Play Fine at Broadway Theatre Evening

The Charm School presented by the seniors Saturday evening at the Broadway theatre drew a large audience. Misses Marquita Young Mabel Steed Helen Bounds Hertha Clark Lola Mac Tegan Melvin Hogera and Hugh Sehaus led strong performances with a well trained cast. A two act number by the boys quartet and a Japanese dance featuring little Miss Dane Alger pleased the crowd.

Miss Wamel Recital Delights Baptist Tabernacle Audience

A large attentive crowd at the Baptist Tabernacle enjoyed Miss Wamel s recital. Pupils showed self possession with each taking part timely while older students impressed with technique. Ensemble piano and violin pieces impressed. young violinists performed beautifully. The crowd felt inspired to pursue music again under Miss Wamel s guidance as the program differed from last week s Headlight copy.

Angelus Driller Deepens Oil Well Below 8000 Feet

The Angelus well pushed past 83996 feet with plans to test deeper sands if pay is found. Florida reports steady progress as the crew resolves mud issues, with cementing options back to 2383 feet if no payoff occurs and renewed effort to strike oil before the 1800 to 1990 foot target.

Demonstration of Electric Cooker for Women's Club

A special meeting of the women's club is set for Monday afternoon May 21 at 3 o'clock in the club rooms. All members should attend to hear about a new electric cooker demonstration by Mr Kissick. The device promises automatic start and ready meals at a set time.

Mrs Thompson Returns Home to Canada from Deming

Mrs Jane Thompson, a clerk at O'Leary's Corner, returned Sunday night to her Calgary, Alberta home in Canada with her two children Frank and Dorothy. In Deming she made many friends. Bower Miller is welcomed back to the bridge at O'Leary's as chief navigating officer.

Honor system to guide New Mexico prison camp work

Santa Fe May 18 The honor system will guide a group of nearly 40 convicts from the State penitentiary now traveling to Enhado via the Denver and Rio Grande. They join the first road camp planned by State Engineer French to work on the Santa Fe Taos highway in the Rio Grande canyon. No guards will accompany the camp, and selected prisoners will pledge not to escape. The county and state share the camp’s funding, kept at the old woody mill by the river as headquarters, and the setup will operate through the summer.

Second Squadron Headquarters Detachment Mustered In

Last Sunday Major Ely commanded the activation of the Second Squadron Headquarters Detachment in Deming New Mexico with acting adjutant general John W Skipwith and Captain Lester A Sprinkl e leading the inspection of Troop C. Deming and Santa Fe are the only NM stations for HQ units as Major Ely heads the new department. officers include Lt William Poe Lt M Hi Cain Lt TW Butler and Fred R Smith with other sergeants and corporals named. the unit, formerly Troop C, fields 68 personnel and seeks recruits, praising the headquarters outfit as the best cavalry unit.
