Congress passed law imposing a one percent revenue tax on luxury goods begins operation May first. The measure targets high cost items and aims to boost government revenue. Officials expect steady collection as businesses adjust pricing and reporting.
Merchants must collect and report the luxury tax at time of sale under a new law enforced by Uncle Sam. The tax applies to nonessential items like soft drinks and ice cream, with 10 percent levies on every 10 cents and mandates that tax cannot be built into prices or charged later.
The hearing of Mary B. Lane charged with killing her husband A S Lane by poison opened before Judge Raymond R Ryan. Prosecutor J S Vaught led the case and Fred Slowman defended the accused. Accompanying in the indictment is Arthur Busan, a son of a former husband. The trial drew large crowds as witnesses testified to alleged threats by Lane and efforts to place the husband in Class One for overseas service. The defense moved for a not guilty verdict after the state's evidence. A $25,008 War Camp Community Service pool at West Eighth street between Pine and Spruce is now in use for Camp Cody and Deming. The 6 by 120 foot concrete walled pool includes shower baths and dressing rooms, with water circulating through three large filters. Continuous filtration keeps the water clean as it recirculates.
The Leahy Tackoon store on Pine Street closed Saturday after over a month in force. Stock will be shipped to the Lordsburg store as the Deming location is moved to Lordsburg. Manager George W. Gee reports encouraging results and will remain with the firm to pursue merchandise ideas.
In Deming Pedro Gonzales faced trial for the February 26 shooting of Damarin Gonzales after a pool room quarrel. Witnesses described gunfire before the victim entered his home and died next morning. Gonzales fled to Douglas, Ariz., later located by deputies and brought back for trial. The defense offered self defense claims, but the jury found Gonzales guilty of first degree murder after about an hour of deliberation.

G E Parks editor of the Columbus Courier visited Deming for a district court case and praised Columbus plans. He cited a Chamber of Commerce near 100 members, publicity chief W I Holt, and stated federal plans to build two regiments worth about half a billion dollars for an airfield town with barracks officers quarters and other buildings.
The Deming Oil, Gas & Development Co announces a price rise for its Steels from 10 cents to 25 cents per share on Saturday night, May 10. Subscriptions emailed before that time will be accepted at the 10-cent rate. Macy Cornelia Green, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Green, is suffering from acute tonsillitis but improving.
