Welcome Plan for Luna County Soldiers Returns

A Red Cross chapter plans a welcome reception for Luna County soldiers returning from service. Funds from the Red Cross Shop on West Pine Street will support the event with a fundraising drive slated for Saturday April 12. Proceeds fund meals, decorations, booths, and prizes to honor the servicemen and encourage community participation.

Reverend H T Mitchelmore Speaks at Camp Cody

Reverend H T Mitchelmore traveled to Camp Cody on Wednesday to deliver two addresses, one at No 1 and another at Key Inse hospital. He has served the ALO during the war period and narrowly avoided service due to family illness, remembered locally as a former pastor of the Presbyterian church.

Baker Stopped for Brief Visit Here

Secretary of War Newton D. Baker stopped in Deming for a few minutes Friday on his way back from inspecting camps around the country. He was met at the station by townspeople and Camp Cody officers. He discussed ramp conditions and the progress of remobilization.

Churches Welcome Returning Soldiers Plan Gains Support

The Brotherhood of St. Andrew initiates a church led program to welcome discharged soldiers. Churches nationwide coordinate denomi nation tailored welcomes based on each man’s faith, with receptions or dances as desired and aid in finding suitable employment. Local ministers, led by Rev. Kenneth L. Houlder, push the effort in Deming and Luna County, with cooperation from Salvation Army YMC A and YWCA and other groups.

Charles L Betts Dies After Long Illness in Deming

The Heath of Dr Charles L Betts occurred at his home Monday morning after a yearlong fight with a progressing disease. Funeral services were held at St Luke's Episcopal Church with Rev Kenneth Houlder, burial in Mountain View cemetery conducted by the Masons. Survived by his widow Louise Hughes and sister Mrs Wimble of Rochester, N Y, Betts had lived in Deming since 1908, served as army veterinarian in the Philippines under Pershing, and was noted for his upright character and adherence to the golden rule.

Bud Williams III Struggles After Illness at Holstein Tome

Bud Williams III, brought from his Hachita ranch three weeks ago, remains in very low condition with no general improvement. Mrs. Williams stays at his bedside at the Sin Hulsteim home on Silver Avenue.

Robt Trammel Laid To Rest In Myndus

Robert Trammel a prominent valley rancher died of pneumonia at his Myndus home after a two week illness. Funeral conducted by J A Mahoney Inc. the body sent to Rector Arkansas for burial. A World War II veteran, he settled on land near Myndus and built a productive farm admired by neighbors in Deming and the valley. Deming Banker Raithel Dies After Illness

G Raithel vice president of the Bank of Deming died at home after a brief illness. Born September 1878 in Germany he moved to New Mexico as a child and rose to vice presidency shaping the bank’s growth. He left a widow two brothers a sister and the Deming community grieving his loss. Funeral plans indicate burial in Los Angeles beside his wife with Masons and Knights of Pythias involvement.
