Lease Renewals Due This Month in Deming Area

Renewals on many oil and gas leases held by Deming citizens are due this month, mostly on state land, with a nominal 12 month renewal at about 15 cents per acre. The Florida Oil Company reports progress on a well at 1600 feet with a 10 inch hole cleared and six inch casing. a shareholders meeting is scheduled for the 18th to discuss development plans. Angelus Company awaits another casing shipment before continuing drilling south of Myndus.

Automobile Show Promises Southwest Big Event in El Paso

The committee claims the upcoming auto show at Liberty Hall El Paso on April 6 and 7 will be the largest ever in the Southwest. It will feature regular stock cars, special builds unseen in the region, and new models. Entertainment, expert hall decoration, and strong interest from Deming dealers are noted.

Snodgresss Return From Coast Delivering Car To Tourist

D C Snodgress and wife returned from Los Angeles last Saturday morning. They drove through in a car delivered to a tourist who had recently arrived in Deming. The tourist left the car for repairs and then proceeded to California by train, hiring Mr Snodgress to deliver the machine once repairs were completed. Last week The Headlight published postal reports from the Snodgresses about the road conditions on their journey to Los Angeles. Masonic meetings are announced for Deming Lodge No 12 with special communications on March 11, 12, and 16 and a special convocation of the Chapter March 12 and a special conclave of the commandery March 21 and 22 for work on various degrees and orders.

New Mexico Land Claim Win Upheld by Supreme Court

The U S supreme court at Washington upheld the states claim to lands within a national forest substitution for tracts owned by New Mexico. The decision reviews the interior department appeal from lower-court injunctions restraining the department from rejecting the state selection list amid a withdrawal order release dispute.

The Tadies Library Association announces reduced hours with the library now open three afternoons weekly. Beginning immediately the schedule is Monday Wednesday and Saturday, allowing the public more efficient access to services.

Contested District Court Voting Rights Case Draws Attention

In district court Judge Sam Bratton hears a case challenging election results over 65 Columbus wives of soldiers from the 24th Infantry whose ballots were rejected. C E B Lindloff and J B McKeyen contest Smyer and Rogers, backed by Republican and Democratic camps respectively. Defendants include P. L. Smyer and Judge G C Rogers, with counsel from Deming and Santa Fe. Arguments unlikely before Saturday. witnesses from Columbus have testified and the case remains closely watched. The Deming Methodist Sunday school leads a three month contest with Las Cruces, 49 to 47.

Series of parties at West Pine hosted by Mrs Hyatt

Mrs Alonso Hyatt and her mother Mrs Hannah hosted a sequence of gatherings this week at West Pine. The Ranchwomen's Club met Tuesday with 500 played, Laura Hall taking high member prize and M C Boucher guest prize. Wednesday featured bridge with Mr and Mrs Clarence Hon winning high prizes, and Thursday followed with more entertaining. Delights were served by the hostess.

Kealy Resigns From Deming Clothing Firm After Six Years

John Kealy, longtime manager of the Deming clothing company, resigns effective the 15th after six and a half years of close involvement. He plans to travel to Los Angeles for a vacation before entering Southern California business. Walter and Verney Clark will operate the store, which will continue as a leading gentlemen's outfitter in Deming.

Radcliffe Chautauqua Starts Next Tuesday

At a meeting of the Deming Chautauqua Association for 1921 Major Clyde Earl Ely serves as president and advertising manager with Mrs. O. H. Almy as secretary treasurer. The Radcliffe Chautauqua will run on March 15 18 and 27 at the Baptist Tabernacle due to uncertain tent quarters from March winds. Thirty two association members signed a guarantee of 550 with surplus to go to the High School Tatler to avoid war tax on admissions. Adults pay 2 for a season and students 1. One and One-Half Fare for Wool Growers and Stockmen

Former Sweethearts United in Marriage in Deming

Mrs. Rura B. Burns of Deming married Wm. E. Hayes of Honey Grove Texas in a ceremony performed by Reverend Mora at the Wyman home in Silver City on Friday March 5 1921. The couple then returned to Deming to reside at 112 South Tin Avenue where friends congratulate them on their union. Hayes and Burns had known each other since childhood and were separated by circumstance before reuniting.

Southern Pacific Seeks Rehearing on Fruit Shipments Rates

Southern Pacific filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission for rehearing or modification of the agency’s rate decision in the Murray & Layne Deming case. The commission had found California fruit and vegetable carload rates unjust and awarded about 1000 in reparations. The order was amended to take effect April 1 instead of March 2.

Peters Resigns Takes El Paso Transfer Firm Stake

County highway commissioner D L Peters resigns and travels to El Paso where he and Sampson have bought a controlling interest in the Longwell Transfer and Automobile company. Peters to run transfer department while Sampson handles automobiles. Peters has built roads in the mountains east of Silver City and will leave road work to Jesus Woates. Healthseeker from Yazoo dies in Deming housed with physician

E. Bean, a healthseeker from Yazoo Mississippi, in Deming for several months under personal physician Dr M H Cain, died at his West Spruce Street apartment Saturday night. His body, with his mother and Dr Cain, was taken to Mississippi for interment on Sunday.

Sewing and Art Class Sale Nets Deming High

Report on the Christmas sale by the Sewing and Art Class of Deming High School under Minn Magee and Mise Ambler.
