Dedication of Spanish Methodist Church in Deming

The Spanish Methodist Episcopal church at Platinum avenue and Hemlock street in Deming will be dedicated next Sunday. Rev. Leandro Fernandez of El Paso will speak, with Dr. H. A. Bassett of Albuquerque preaching in the afternoon, where about 16 children are expected to receive baptism. The new 60 by 40 foot auditorium features a raised ceiling, with a modern second-floor layout and social rooms. The project cost about 11,000 dollars, supported by a 5,000 dollar Centenary grant and local contributions, with about 1,800 dollars outstanding.

Child Burned by Cup of Hot Coffee

The paper reports a young child of Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Hughes severely burned on the face arms and breast after overturning a cup of hot coffee at the breakfast table. The child, just learning to walk, leaned to the table and tipped the cup causing the burn. The family rushed the boy to a doctor where the burns were dressed and he is recovering nicely.

Markell Dial Seriously Ill at Home After Illness

Maskell Dial has been confined to his home since Thursday after a sudden collapse at The Headlight office. The attending doctor reports no immediate danger unless complications arise. Friends and family are relieved that he was notably improved last evening.

Angelus companys well No 1 halted last Friday evening. Manager Frank Manley and Driller C Poland left Saturday to attend a stockholders meeting slated for Tuesday afternoon. At 2060 feet, the hole faced diversities including quicksand and uncertain future drilling plans. The Florida company continues drilling slowly under the motto Bo first.

Autoists Narrow Escape From Fatalities

Rev. T. M. Harwood, Manuel Flores and Epigmenio Flores narrowly escaped a fatal automobile accident Monday while returning from the Spanish Methodist quarterly conference at Valverde. Their car rolled down a hill near the Arroyo Seco bottom after the engine misfired and brakes failed. the wheels smashed and all occupants escaped injury.

Prohibition Officers Nab Pair After Liquor Car Chase

Prohibition Officer J W Quirk Sheriff Jack Smyer and Deputy H J Kane arrested a man and a woman near Deming after a pursuit in a loaded car containing about 300 quarts of Canadian Club whisky. Charges include transporting liquor with concealed weapons. The car had false pockets and built in compartments. They allegedly tried to run over officers. both suspects faced weapons charges under New Mexico law. The whisky value is estimated at 10 000 to 15 000 dollars. The woman is suspected of prior offenses. the arrest followed days of surveillance and an El Paso river chase.

Missionary Boot Enjoyable Afternoon at Mrs Thomason's

The Methodist Missionary group met at Mrs. Thomason's residence on Thursday June 16 for a pleasant program. Mrs. Thomason presided, Mrs. Steed led the program, and Mrs. Milley read Scripture. guests enjoyed entertaining talks by Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Orton. A unique close featured guests drawing outlines of cloth tokens with animal or object designs and a display of artistic talent. Refreshments followed with punch and cake, social meetings continuing monthly.

The Truthseekers class of the Meth dist Sunday school met at Mrs Eldon Slogs 518 South Diamond Avenue Tuesday afternoon. Early Deming Resident Dies in California

J A Raithel, an early Deming resident and charter Masonic member, dies at his San Bernardino home. He left Deming about 22 years ago and was linked with early local business interests. Chris and Henry Raithel receive the death information.

Death of Mrs Elli Pontius in Wits Alabama

Mrs Elli Pontius wife of A M Pontius died at her home on North Second Street Monday night at 11 four. She had poor health for seven months and five months bedridden. She was 48 or 50 years old and left grown daughters and two sons. Funeral Wednesday afternoon at Duffield Chapel with Rev K L Livermore delivering the sermon. Casket laid with flowers, many neighbors and friends attended. Three brothers and three sisters in the east survive. Body shipped to Oroville, Ohio for interment. pallbearers named. Pontius family will return from the east in about ten days. children to stay with relatives in Ohio until fall term opens. The husband and children mourn the loss of the entire community.

Deming team plans four week schedule beginning July 10 with Deming hosting Lordsburg at Deming. July 17 features Lordsburg at Lordsburg. Arrangements are being made to possibly play a Deming versus Riverside National game at Hot Springs on the Fourth of July.

Baptist Ladies Motor to the Martin Ranch

About 30 members of the Woman's Missionary Society of the Baptist church motored to Mrs. Harley Martin's ranch near Dwyer. They enjoyed a program on Christian Education with readings and music, a two course luncheon, a Bosque stroll, and a visit to the Indian den. Guests praised hostesses Mrs Martin and Mrs Doolittle for the hospitality.

Gasoline Fire at Blacksmith Shop Prompted Quick Response

Jeff Davis first on the big white auto fire engine and Dan Hathaway quickly answered the Tuesday alarm. Hathaway arrived to find the Peterson shop already under control. The blaze was due to fumes from forging tank fuel being heated.

Washington The house mining committee voted against forcing annual assessment work on mining claims for 1920 and up to June 30 next. Claimants must perform 100 dollars of work per year until a government patent is issued, under the approved resolution.
