Deming Seeks Spanish War Vets Post Charter

Efforts are under way to establish a Spanish War veterans post in Deming for those who served in the army during the war of 1898. Veterans urged to contact J A Kealey, Deming, to join and help reach the 12 needed for a charter. Nine have been located so far.

Major Lewis Turtle to visit Deming Tuesday

Major Lewis Turtle of the Organized Reserves arrives in Deming at 9 55 Tuesday morning and stays until 6 23. At 2 pm a Chamber of Commerce meeting invites former Army members, National Guard personnel, prominent civilians, and potential Reserve supporters to attend.

Friday marks school close for summer after exams. Senior class program featured students presenting gavel emblem and class history with solo and violin performances. Eighth grade exercises followed with a May Time orchestra and a play titled Seven Old Ladies of Lavender Town plus certificates.

Attorney J S Vaught a prominent New Mexico lawyer

The Deming based attorney J S Vaught is well known across New Mexico for his extensive practice. A Mississippi native, he arrived in Deming eleven years ago and has built a top statewide firm. From 1916 to 1920 he served as Luna County prosecutor and led anti crime efforts across Luna Grant and Hidalgo counties. He is chief counsel for the Southwestern Stock Growers Association and credited with sending many cattle rustlers to prison. He campaigned for Gov Hinkie last fall, helping secure a strong Democratic majority.

Deming Light Rates Held Steady After Hearings

Deming residents were told the electric light and power rates would remain unchanged after a series of discussions led by the State Commerce Commission. The Deming Booster Club sought a reduction, but the commission advised postponement pending more data and ultimately closed the case on May 19 1923. Thousands packed a vacant lot beside O Leary's corner to hear the 7th Cavalry Band from Ft. Bliss on a Deming stop en route to Ft. Bayard. Local organizers credit J C O Leary and A J Skidmore for orchestrating the show. A Bayard bound concert followed with a packed audience and high town praise. Clara Phillips Returned to U S After Honduras Escape

Clara Phillips, convicted in Los Angeles for the murder of Alberta Meadows, sentenced to ten years at San Quentin, escaped from a city jail, was captured in Honduras and brought back by agents from Los Angeles. The train moved through Deming at 11 42 p m, with hopes she will be re jailed soon and fight to clear her name.
