Legion Post Is Named for Claude Howard

The American Legion post organized last Thursday at the armory in Luna County was named the Claude Howard Post in honor of a local veteran who died in France. Capt Clyde Earl Ely chaired the meeting and named officers including Ely as post commander and Walter Clark as adjutant, with several committees appointed to handle by laws, membership, and entertainment. A second meeting will be held to complete the organization and invite all veterans to join.

Mrs. Bickford Returns From Chicago Medical Treatment

Mrs EB H Bickford has returned from Chicago after several months abroad for medical care following a nervous and physical breakdown caused largely by extensive Red Cross and war work.

Yale Goode Killed by Lightning Stroke

Yale Goode aged 18 son of T. J. Goode of Hanover was killed by a lightning stroke Sunday. Telegram to U S Commissioner B Y McKeyes reported the accident. no details given. Funeral held Monday in Silver City. He was employed in the electrical department of China Copper company plant at Santa Rita and was highly regarded by his employers and colleagues.

Bassett of the W. C. C. S. was away Sunday after work in Douglas Arig. He also went to Silver City on Monday where the W. G. G. 8. has opened a new commodious club and citizens cooperate with the society in every way.

Buckingham and Butler wed in Wilmington church service

Richard L. Buckingham of Wilmington Delaware and Miss Sara Butler of Deming were married here Monday by Rev. W G Childress of the Methodist church. They left the following day for Wilmington to begin married life together.

Collects Poll Taxes by Police Chief Kealy

Chief of Police James A. Kealy is depicted as collecting the 1919 poll tax from many citizens. The dollar receipt grants access to the polls in the next election and serves to bolster his standing in the community.

Suit Dismissed Over Telephone Rate Rise

On Monday Judge Reed Holloman dismissed the state's suit against Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph and the postmaster general. The case sought to bar rate increases in the state, but the U S Supreme Court ruled the company had the right to raise rates.

Deming Mill Receives 225 Tons Of Wheat From Arizona

John W. Clark of the Deming roller mills unloaded seven cars of wheat bought in Arizona totaling about 225 tons of premium grain. He expects this stock to last two months until the local crop, estimated at five cars, is ready. The mill’s output will be competitive with outside shippers as Deming stores eagerly take the product.

Noonan installs large water tank at Snake mine

John J. Noonan of Hillsboro yesterday reported he finished installing a 26,000 gallon water tank for the Snake mine. He recently organized the Hillsboro Transportation company and bought a Duplex four wheel drive truck from Lester Motor Company for his Sierra county business, using it alongside a Kissel truck.

Hanson Won Promotion

Edward Hart of Gallup visited town early this week to review property east of town. His son in law A W Hanson, formerly with the 81st division in France, earned Croix de Guerre and commendations. Hanson now resides in Los Angeles running a livestock business. Hart notes Hanson sent him a German machine gun he captured, used for credit customers.

Reverend Porter resigns from Demning Baptist church

Rev. B. D. Porter, pastor of the Baptist church in Demning, has resigned effective September 1. Since arriving at the start of the year he led efforts for congregation improvement and moral uplift, raising funds, delivering lectures, visiting families, distributing tracts, traveling miles, teaching teachers, and leading revivals and conferences. Committee forms seven member civic work panel

A civic group selected seven members at a Wednesday luncheon to organize and manage association projects. The new committee will oversee community programs and coordinate volunteers.

Plan Field Day for Soldiers in Luna County

Over twenty people met at the armory to organize a Luna County Community Service association. Fred Sherman chaired the luncheon and announced a seven member executive committee with one member from each allied organization. A nominating committee submitted seven names and the group unanimously elected them. A fundraiser of 75 to 100 dollars was planned to prize field day events when the 12th cavalry arrives in Deming. Committees were named to secure funds, and local groups pledged support. Ralph A. Lyndh will lead next week’s luncheon program.

Airship Passes Over Deming in Morning Flight

Ten are drowned in flash flood wreck near Silver City

A torrent swamped a wagon nine miles east of Silver City on Sunday, killing Mrs. Galvan and nine children. Ramon Galvan and several neighbors’ kids rode out the flood. five children survived. Ages cited include Salvador Gonzalez two and Tomas Gonzalez six, with Galvan and Mrs. Galvan among the deceased.

Legion Would Amend War Risk Insurance
