Bill Wing, known as Bill, comes home after 24 months in the navy. He was stationed with the U S Navy and was discharged, having trained with the local telephone company prior to his service.

Troops Halt in Deming During Border Campaign Visit

Col George W Biegler leads the 12th cavalry units and support troops arriving in Deming from the border on a two day hike to Silver City. They camp at the old base hospital, enjoy armory dances, swimming, and planned boxing and a field day in Silver City postponed due to weather.

Real Moving Picture Novelty At Princess Theatre

In Deming the Princess theatre will show Martin Johnsons The Cannibals of the South Seas after seven months of Pacific travel. The film, shot with Sol Carragin and Sohngon, follows island journeys and tribes including one crew nearly eaten by a British warship. Tomorrow Fannie Ward stars in The Call of the Weak, hailed as surpassing her previous work.

Dick Headrick of Derming Returns Home From War

Dick Headrick, a Derming native with the 1A. & FE., returned home late last week after discharge. He crossed with the Bith division to England and spent five months in a hospital. Rejoining his unit in Germany, he soon required further hospital treatment and later underwent an appendectomy at El Paso. A subsequent note corrects a mix up with a different Hendrick who was wounded in France.

Deming Invites President Wilson to Speak

Governor names mining commission for tax plan

Governor C. A. Larrazolo appointed Judge Reet Holloman of the First Judicial district Dr. Austin D. Crile president of the State College and Joe Sheridan of Silver City as mine inspectors to study mining conditions and draft a law taxing mining properties equally for the next legislature. Czech Slovak Veterans Pass Through Deming in Transit

About 1047 veterans of the Czech-Slovak armies, wounded or disabled, marched through Deming en route from Vladivostok to Prague. Originating in 1914 with the Austro-Hungarian forces, they later fought the Austrians, Bolsheviks, and on the Eastern Front, before reorganization in Siberia. They will tour the United States with a review by President Wilson planned in Washington.

Red Cross delegates urge continued postwar relief work

A Red Cross delegation from the Mountaine Division of the 44s in Denver spoke at the armory outlining postwar duties. George F. Oxley stressed ongoing home service and health work among workers, juniors, and the poor, noting the war’s end did not end need. E. W. Corn recounted Belgium experiences, with Maurice Willows and Lettie G. Welsh joining to address local members and encourage continued support.

El Paso banners report L J Murphy, secretary of the Knights of Columbus in the Southwest, is transferred to a northern camp to direct athletics. B J Brady arrives to succeed him. Tax Raises Discussed at Meeting Here

The state tax commission in session for three days heard protests against recent valuations set by County Assessor J. T. Hunter and Wylie. Merchants and stockmen in Grant County argued their assessments, with decisions to be announced after further review in Santa Fe and Silver City. The board met at various points, led by secretary John Joerns, while P. Ascarate was ill. County officials Nordhaus and Chadbourne hosted the visitors.

Citizens to vote on liquor question in New Mexico

An alternative writ of mandamus compels the New Mexico secretary of state to submit to voters at the next general election the choice to reject or ratify the federal prohibition amendment. The secretary, advised by the attorney general, had refused, and now must appear August 22 to show cause for noncompliance.

Doral in Lemon Extract Incident Leads to Fine

Guadalupe Lens appeared in justice court charged with carrying a 25 caliber automatic pistol in Lana. Deputy J. R. Jackson testified Lens had been drinking lemon extract. Lens threatened Pete Chanson with the weapon before arrest. a spectator seized the gun. Judge C. Rogers fined Lens $50 and ordered 90 days in jail with costs.

Twelve plead guilty in Silver City court session

District Attorney J S Vaught attended a court session before Judge Raymond 2 Ryan as twelve defendants pleaded guilty for various offenses and were sentenced. Nicanor Rodriguez, 31, a jailbreaker, was captured and held for Sierra county officers. The week brought warm, partly cloudy weather with needed rain in some areas and harvests of winter grains progressing well.
