Veterans Form Club in Deming

The Deming Disabled Veterans Club was formally organized at a Moosehall meeting. Officers and committees were elected including president R A Gallagher and secretary F C Nagle. The group plans to welcome disabled veterans, arrange housing, publicity, and support with aid from the Deming Boosters Club.

Deming Booze Joint Enjoined in Federal Action

U S District Attorney Craig filed a complaint in Santa Fe against Anna Leggette and Herbert A Osmer seeking a temporary injunction to stop their Deming residence at 1389 North Silver Avenue from being used to sell intoxicating liquor and to bar the premises from public use for one year. Luther Wright and J Burnett were indicted by Sierra county grand jury for the killing of John Sikes at the J P Nunn ranch east of Lake Valley on April 19. Oscar Downs, 16, brother of Mrs L B Davis of Deming, died in El Paso from typhoid fever last Thursday, with Mrs Davis at his side.

Cook Files Wound After Barbed Wire Accident

CG. W. Cook sustained a severe leg injury at his Fort Cummins ranch last Friday when a mule team hauling a half mile of barbed wire turned a post. He was caught between the post and wire, needing 20 axillary stitches, but is reported progressing favorably and expected to recover unless complications arise.

Sandstorm Division Plans Big Reunion At Omaha

Members of the 24th Sandstorm division trained at Camp Cody plan a three day reunion in Omaha Nebraska on September 19 20 and 21 Dr E 3 Bullock of Silver City who served with the division in the war announced Col John H Malony Crenton transmitted the notice The division drew many soldiers from Lunn Grant and Hidalgo counties and many will attend Major General John A Johnson who commanded the division will attend with his staff.

Brown Inspects Cavalry Troop in Deming Visit

Adjutant General Henry R. Brown of New Mexico spent part of last week in Deming inspecting state guard affairs. He authorized temporary stables, praised troopers at drills, and noted imminent permanent facilities as equipment shipments were delayed by army force reductions. In Albuquerque he met locals and discussed troop needs. A separate ruling says Solo is not illegal under the anti gambling law, with an appeal planned to the state supreme court. Henry C. Lincomb of Myndus and Mrs. E. C. Gallimore completed proofs on land before county officials.

Veterans Club Adopts By Laws In Deming New Mexico

At a Wednesday meeting of the Disabled Veterans Club of Deming New Mexico the members adopted a local set of by laws. The rules establish the club name purpose finances officers and meeting structure. A resolutions committee was appointed to thank the Deming Boosters Club for room and assistance.

Deming Fire Department Receives $1500 State Funds

The Deming fire department will use a $1500 state fire protection fund check, ending a dispute over fair share allocations. City officials led by Fire Chief P. A. Hughes and the fire committee secured the funds to upgrade equipment, including new hose and truck payments, reflecting the department’s strong standing and east-town coverage. Equipment value is estimated at $25,000 to $30,000, with one full-time and four part-time paid members, plus trained volunteers. The department recently acquired 16 ten-foot hose sections for $410, now valued at around $11 per foot.

Old Guard Smothers Revolt at Pecinct Primary

In Tuna county the planned rebel slate failed to topple the old guard at the precinct primary. The meeting elected Toby C. Watson chair and A. AL Teathe secretary while factions debated delegate choices, with Sherman Wing and Pollard proposing competing lists. The adjournment left rebels regrouping as the old regime retained control for now.

Florida officials launch money raising campaign for pipe

Florida Oil Company officials convened a board meeting to finalize plans to raise eight thousand dollars for pipe. W W Wilcox will lead the fundraising early next week offering leases and company stock in Deming to secure local support. Dr Janet Reid resigned as secretary and a successor will be chosen at the next meeting.

After a Baptist W M A business meeting this week the net from last month’s food salon at the Tabernacle on West Pine street was announced as $42.80. The ladies thank all who assisted and supported the event through the local press.

Larrazolo May Run As Independent Candidate

Former Governor C A Larrazolo of New Mexico plans to enter the U S Senate race as an independent, guided by opposition to Bursum. He resides in New Mexico but practices law in El Paso as reports note. Separate items report towns in New Mexico contesting a September 1 telephone rate hike before the state corporation commission.

New Angelus Derrick Nearing Completion

The derrick at the Angelus well, to replace the one that collapsed while removing casing, is nearing completion and should be finished early next week. C B Poland, the driver, stated this week that once the derrick is finished and machinery adjusted, drilling will resume and be rushed to reach a prompt decision despite the risk of delays from the presence of air.

Erect Monument to Claude Close Howard in Deming

Deming moves to honor Claude Close Howard with a granite monument on the courthouse lawn. The stone and tablet have shipped and should arrive by week’s end. Howard, a Me Shine Gun Company Private, was killed in action September 22, 1918 in France during a raid. Donations fund the project, with a planned unveiling program and public subscription support continuing at The Headlight and Graphic offices.

Thieves Break Into Mahoney’s Store

Thieves robbed the Mahoney store late Sunday or early Monday, forcing a rear entrance and stealing pocket knives and razors from show cases. An electric flashlight was taken, desks were rifled, and two gunny sacks found in the rear alley. Police are investigating the case.
