Khaki Club at Silver City Opens Today

The Khaki Club opens July 4 in Silver City on Bullard Street, built by War Camp Community Service for Fort Bayard soldiers. G Sage will manage. facilities include reception, dining, pool tables, showers, and sleeping rooms for visiting servicemen. Local groups funded a hospital treat for wounded and ill soldiers, highlighting community support for veterans.

Child Killed as Grenade Explodes During Play

Three year old Carolina Gonzalez died at county hospital after a hand grenade she and other children were playing with exploded at their home in the city’s north. Brother Francisco and Tomas Tisnerez were badly injured but expected to recover. Grenade fragments damaged walls and windows. ownership origin unclear. Lieutenant Sam Lindauer, recently retired, returned to Los Angeles to resume work with a coast mortgage firm.

Neighbors Celebrate Independence Day in Lie State towns

Several towns in Lie state stage celebrations for Independence Day and the peace treaty. Silver City Colural and Hillsboro attract most attention as residents join events and pilgrimages. Deming Oil Talks Eye six month drilling forecast

At a Deming luncheon geologist T A Holmes predicted a producing oil well in the Deming field within six months while Deming Bisbee Oil & Production Co head Frank W Taylor and landowner James S O'Brien discussed plans to lease about 4000 acres. Holmes described field indicators and Tampico comparisons as evidence for oil prospects amid community support and caution for wary wildcat operators.

Death of W. B. Taylor Goat rancher dies at 40 in Wemersey

Wallon B. Taylor a leading county goat rancher died at his Wemersey home from paralysis aged 40. He had partnered with brother-in-law W May in ranching and worked as night watchman for Murray and Layne Co. He was born in Alabama and survived by two sisters. Rev W C Childress officiated at service. burial at Mountain View. Pallbearers were Knights of Pythias members.

Careless Target Practice Incident at Chinese Garden

Deputy Sheriff J. R. Jackson responded to the Chinese garden on Wednesday after a 22 rifle ricochet injured a young woman in the leg. The marksmen were admonished as officers confiscated the rifle and warned about firearm handling.

Memorial service honors Claude Close Howard at Methodist Church

Eloquent testimonies by Rev W C Childress and Rev W E Foulks described Claude Howard as a clean, manly, selfless individual. Speakers recalled his fair play in school and sports, duty as a soldier, and his act of sharing emergency rations with a fellow soldier on the eve of his death. Klondyke Oil Company Members Meet Over Geologist Report

Deming Klondyke Oil Company members will meet Tuesday night at the Deming club to discuss the geologist's report on holdings. The report says little prospect for oil but urges retaining the land. The meeting is at 8 p.m. Mrs. A. W. Pollard and daughter Miss Wandra Pollard visit Mrs. Rogers in Portage, Wisconsin for part of the summer.

Germans Sign Peace Treaty at Versailles End of War

The 28 June signing in the Hall of Mirrors marked the end of World War I. German commissioners affixed first signatures, followed by President Wilson and other powers. Guards, processions, and synchronized tables supported rapid signing as Allied leaders cheered the end of five years of global conflict.

Oil drilling boosts Deming field with Texas Control work

James O'Brien returns from oil fields to seal a contract with Texas Control and Consolidated Oil Co for completing his well south of town. The company will spend about 45000 and erect a 90 foot derrick under H C Barghbaugh. Drilling targets 1700 to 2700 feet with strong odds around 2200. C R Cox says firm will push operations, aiming to make Deming a regional oil center soon.

Texas Capitalists Watching Deming Field Boom

Dr. Mark Risley of Risway Lucas returned from weeks in Texas and Louisiana oil regions evaluating selling wells near Deming. He notes New Mexico rising in oil interest, Fort Worth capitalists eyeing the field, with plans to invest if production grows. He also reports Shreveport wells near 600 barrels daily, new refineries at capacity, and Eastland’s oil boom settling into a stable phase. Lucas remains in El Paso on company affairs while Risley visited Arkansas to see a sister.

War council approves transferring the Y W C A hostess house and cottages on West Pine street to the Deming community service committee for social and welfare work. Delaware Infantry Gets Unique wartime booklet

Frank E. Rich received from Col J Warner Reed a history of the Delaware Infantry now the 59th Pioneer Infantry. It covers the regiment’s recent war activities with a special section on the time with the 4th separate brigade. The booklet, printed on German paper, was produced in a French shop and bears foreign printer marks. Colonel Reed notes the regiment expected to sail from Brest on June 18.
