Fugitives' Hunt Ends in Shootout Across Three States

Sheriff and posse pursued Sprague after a spree that left three dead. Sprague was shot by Dona Ana County officials, wounded, and died after pleading for water. Bodies of Turner's, Cochran’s, and Brown’s were dispersed to San Francisco, Branson, and Indianola, with Sprague buried in Paris, Missouri, per his wife.

Union Missionary Meeting Glorifies Local Churches

The Union Missionary Societies of Deming were delightfully entertained at the Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon January 23. Ladies across churches praised the well prepared program, tasteful decorations, and generous refreshments while pastors joined in a rare service with no obligation to contribute. Mrs. Matthews opened with Bible readings and reflections on Old Testament Anticipation and New Testament Realization, featuring scripture from Isaiah and Luke 4 16 2. Charged With Stealing Wire in Columbus Case

District Attorney Forrest Fielder and Sheriff Smyer led a group to Columbia Monday where Birchfield and Lt. Stuart, a Negro, faced justice court on charges of stealing 700 pounds of wire fencing. They allegedly tore down wire on the Richards on property east of Columbus. Bath waived preliminary hearing. Birchfield bonded at 1000 dollars to the grand jury, while Stuart remained jailed.
