Blizzard Sweeps the Southwest Brings Cold to New Mexico

The severe cold and heavy snow, the worst in fifteen years, blanketed New Mexico causing deep drifts and subzero readings while stockmen and farmers anticipate a fat cattle season. Deming saw cold related injuries but no deaths. A man rode a train to Deming then froze fingers and toes after thawing at the Ladies Hospital. Bricklayer Jean Balou suffered frozen feet in the cold.

Truth and Weather Sparks Inkslinger Banter

In remarks from a 19th century issue the Graphic’s Ely is teased for a witty column about sun in New Mexico and harsh winter in nearby towns. The Headlight reports a cold windy, snowy Sunday and a brutal Monday, joking that temperatures were severe without a thermometer.

Sadler Expands Fluor Spar Mines Operations

G M Sadler has taken over the American Firemens Mining fluor spar mines and starts operation with twenty workers. Output reaches 500 tons monthly sent to Colorado Fuel and Iron at Pueblo. The spar, over 90 percent calcium fluoride, is used as a flux. Mines lie twelve miles from Deming near Cook's range with Florida station as shipping point. Sadler also opens several promising new locations.

Civil Service Clerk Exam Set For February Date

An examination for clerk will be held in this city February 8 1913. Applicants must be 18 to 45 years old on the date of the exam. Married women are not admitted except divorced or separated women who support themselves and may be appointed only as clerks. Applicants must be physically fit and male applicants must be at least five feet four inches tall and weigh no less than 125 pounds without coat or hat. For blanks and information contact Herbert D. Delinquent Bills Prompt Service Cuts Begin

After February 10 1918 all city light and power customers with unpaid bills by the 10th of the month face service disconnection. The Demine Ice and Electric Co says it is unfair to void the 10 percent discount for payments made by the 7th. The Luna County Road Board held a routine meeting Wednesday with no notable business.

Auto Route Includ es Deming Route Through New Mexico

Delegates from southern New Mexico counties meet in Deming to approve an auto route through the state linking Lordsburg Silver City Deming Las Cruces and a tentative Las Cruces to El Paso segment. The NM auxiliary is organized with W S Cox vice president and Francis E Lester state organizer.

Bryan and Edith McLaughlin Wed at Methodist Parsonage

John B. Bryan of Las Cruces and Miss Edith McLaughlin were married by Rev. H. M. Bruce on Monday January 6 at the Methodist parsonage. The couple left for Las Cruces to begin their married life.

Protracted Baptist Meetings Postponed Indefinitely

Protracted meetings at the Baptist church are delayed due to Rev. G. T. Finch absence. Mr. Finch traveled to Kansas City for an operation and his recovery has been slow. He is due home next week and meetings will resume soon after.

Lake Valley mining shows high grade ore at Dude shaft

Alfred Strum of Lake Vailey reports the Dude mine six miles southeast of town holds large bodies of high grade commercial ore and may soon become pay. The BioMetallic Mining and Milling Co or its Serumnigumanager say prospects look bright as vein catarappings and resistive minerals indicate rich development ahead. A stockholders meeting in Deming Graphic office elected Claude Chaum to the board, replacing Thomas G. Aitken.

Burrell Lectures on Good Roads here in New Mexico

Burrell from the United States Office of Public Roads gave a Friday lecture illustrated with stereopticon views on proper road construction and the savings from good roads. He highlighted See America First, noted Europe tourist spend and Colorado gains from travelers, and described the office’s staff, experiments, and free advisory services.

Agricultural Train To Visit Deming

The New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts extension train arrives in Deming on January 17 for a night stop. Dr Garrison and several department heads will give illustrated talks on crops irrigation dairying and more to assist local farmers stockmen and teachers. The Chamber of Commerce supports the event with posters urging attendance.
