Bayard Hospital Expansion Planned by Congress

Washington The House passed a bill to build five hospitals for disabled veterans at an estimated 12.5 million dollars, with 600 thousand for converting Fort Walla Walla and Fort McKenzie buildings. It also authorizes a 3 million dollar hospital by New York state and sets regional locations including Great Lakes and Southern California. The Senate proposed 6.1 million for care facilities and new or improved public heart service hospitals in multiple cities.

Sunday Schools Contest Sparks Keen Deming Las Cruces

A Methodist Sunday schools contest between Deming and Las Cruces began last Sunday and runs four months. Points count for punctuality, attendance and new members. Deming leads 11 to 7. the losing side pays a forfeit to the winners, prize to be decided later.

Firemen to Hold Grand Ball February 22

Fire department in Deming plans a grand ball to honor Washington's birthday at the house. A first class jazz orchestra is engaged and tickets are $1.50 for gentlemen with ladies free. Reservations encouraged to show appreciation for the fire boys' work.

Tyrone Car Overturns on Silver City Road

During a dust storm last Saturday a touring car owned by Dr. Miner of Tyrone overturned on the Silver City road about five miles north of Deming. All four occupants escaped injury. Dr. Miner and his family returned to Deming and resumed their journey to Tyrone the next morning.

Child Welfare Meeting Monday Evening At 7 30

Dr Janet Reid returns from Santa Fe to promote child welfare and urges every woman in Deming to attend a meeting at her Spruce Street offices on Monday evening February 14 at 7:30 where useful information will be shared.

Kendall Pioneer of the Southwest Dies Here

William E. Kendall aged 79 died here last Wednesday and his body was sent to El Paso for burial. He had lived with his daughter for two years after moving from El Paso where he resided 34 years. Survived by wife Mary Kendall two sons G W Kendall and W E Kendall and three daughters Mrs J H Shinn Mrs W Simpson and Mrs J W Warden.

New York Life Official Visits Local Agent In Albuquerque

F. PD. Sisk, manager of the New Mexico branch of New York Life Insurance, in Albuquerque for a few days with Haskell Dial, notes 1921 outlook is bright. He cites universal recognition of life insurance and tight money as heightening demand for protection. New York Life wrote over 693 million in 1920 with January 1921 activity likely to exceed. Arizona and New Mexico combined 1920 business over 6 million, justifying separate NM branch in Albuquerque since January 1.

Deming Postmaster Race Moves as Ely Withdraws

Clyde Earl Ely withdraws as candidate for Deming postmaster and attacks petition practice in his Graphic front. Opponent L C Tucker has county and state party endorsements. The Headlight remains nonpartisan. Also notes a Paramount Aircraft feature at Majestic Theatre on February 16 and 17 with matinee Wednesday at 2.

Pioneer of Southwest Passes Away Sunday

William Dee Strickler longtime Deming resident and Deming Ice and Electric Co employee died early Sunday at a local hospital after being rushed from home for stomach surgery but died before operation. He leaves a wife, three grown children, and three grandkids. Born September 3 1867 in Fairfield Virginia he moved to Colorado then to Deming 22 years ago. Funeral held at Nazarene church with Rev M E Crawford. interment Mountainview cemetery.

Property returns due by February 28 with 25 percent penalty

County assessor J. T. Hunter reminds residents that February 28 is the deadline to file property returns. After that date a 25 percent penalty will be added. Ample warning is given and all are urged not to wait until the last day to attend to this important matter.

Mrs Hodson Hosts Valentine Party for Mrs Heyman

Mrs E Hodson will entertain the Suburban club Monday afternoon February 14 with a Valentine party at the Southevon home in honor of Mrs A C Heyman who is leaving Deming. Florida Well Making Satisfactory Progress

The Florida Oil Co. reports progress on a well west of town with a 10 inch hole reaching 1460 feet. Driller Bumpus says the shoe lost from the 768 inch casing has been passed and he expects to pass the two lengths of smaller casing after exceeding 1565 feet. The hole is water filled but drilling continues with the 10 inch bit and no casing will be set yet. The Angelus well is expected to resume drilling soon.

Jones Resigns as Manager of Standard Grocery Co

Thomas H Jones, manager of the Standard Grocery Co, has resigned to accept an offer from Hills Bros Coffer people. Janet will move with his family to Fort Worth Texas to start new duties. He cites his wife health and residence reasons, and Deming friends wish them success.

Bayard Patients in Fatal Auto Accident

Raymond W. Irvin a Fort Bayard sanitarium patient was killed and Henderson W. Purdue a patient was badly injured when a new Nash car loaned from Fort Bayard overturned near Silver City on Sunday. No witnesses exist but Purdue was rushed to Silver City hospital. Irvin’s body shipped to Mackine Michigan. Purdue’s home is Nora Kentucky.
