Chamber of Commerce banquet highlights year of growth

The Chamber of Commerce held a social meet and banquet at the Harvey house with about 200 attendees including state officials. Mayor Corbett chaired, Gov. McDonald spoke highly of the gathering, and leaders like A. A. Temke and W. E. Holt addressed the crowd.

White Elephant Bazaar Brings Multinational Street Fair to Crystal Theatre

Deming Woman's Club hosts a two day event at Crystal Theatre on Dee 19 and 20 featuring Booths for Ice Cream Candy Fish Pond Japanese Mexican and White Elephant with decorations by country. Belles of Blackville perform Friday and Saturday nights and a fortune telling booth attracts crowds. Admission is free and vendors prepare white elephants on Monday the 15th.

Contest Makes Good Start in Local Vote for Miss Popular

Nominations pour in for a county wide contest offering a $400 Obermeyer piano and other prizes. Votes earned by merchant purchases and new subscriptions fuel the race, with a January 10 first count and a $10 gold prize for top vote getter.

Map of Deming Wells Shows Irrigation Capacities

Land Commissioner Robert P. Ervien prepared a map of Deming district irrigation wells with a table of capacity from weir measurements, depth to water, and lift. It lists J M Graham well at 90 feet deep, 87 foot lift, 609 gpm, and the Mimbres Valley eight-well pump at 8 feet depth, 76 foot lift, 1705 gpm. The Jacobs well has the greatest lift at 76 feet with 400 gpm, while Ervien’s log shows a 65 foot well with 473 gpm belonging to Sherman K Jacob.

Former Postmaster General Hitchcock in Deming Visit

Former Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock stopped in Deming on Monday for an informal reception at Union Station before touring the Mogollon mining districts where he holds large interests. The prominent ex-official is reported in splendid health.

Luna County Telephone weigh extending lines to Columbus

At a Luna County Telephone Company meeting in the Chamber of Commerce a plan to extend lines from Hon date to Columbus was discussed. Columbus Exchange manager offered cooperation and stock financing via farmer blocks. Voters favored extension if financing is arranged, linking at Deming with Mountain States Telephone Co for mutual revenue.

Record Deming Land Sale Sets New State Benchmark

Robt P Erview NM State Land Commissioner presided at a Deming court house sale of school sections that drew crowds and sold 9 091 acres for 186 488 00. Capt Frederick Mueller oversaw the auction with many parcels fetching higher per acre prices, especially near Deming, showing strong local demand and faith in land value. Commission Ervien plans a follow up sale with smaller tracts to capitalize on higher prices.
