S P to lay 110 rail on Tucson division soon
The Southern Pacific plans heavy rail work on the Tucson division starting after this summer. Replacement of 80 and 30 pound rails with 110 pound rail will begin in fall 1923, with total costs estimated at 200000 to 400000 dollars. The project includes yards, trackage, a new main line, and bridge work over the Colorado River at Yuma, with completion targeted by January 1, 1924.

Hamilton and speakers Postmaster Clyde Earlly Attorney John C. Watson and Rev. J. T. Redman spoke on Harding's spiritual side and steadfast principles. The male quartet sang Lead Kindly Light and Somewhere as Rev. Schirmer offered a closing prayer, honoring the late president’s citizenship labor and ideals.

Tragic death of James Gassaway at Hurley yard
James Gassaway, former Santa Fe switchman now based in Hurley, died instantly yesterday when he fell from a switch engine and was struck by the moving locomotive. He rode the footboard with one foot on the board and the other on the coupler. the coupler foot slipped, flinging him into the engine’s path. He leaves a wife and child. His brother Jesse recently left Deming for Topeka, Kansas, where he works for the Santa Fe. In other news, New Mexico National Guard units, including Troop C and Headquarters Detachment, are departing to Fort Bliss for a two week encampment, with details on formation, train arrivals, and personnel.
