Carl Magee to Speak in Deming on August 11

Editor Carl C. Magee of the New Mexico State Tribune begins a tour to address New Mexico problems. The itinerary includes Fort Sumner, Santa Rosa, Tucumcari, Clovis, Roswell, Artesia, Carlsbad, Alamogordo, Corrizozo, Las Cruces, Deming on August 11, and Silver City on August 18. Deming eager for his visit. both Democrats and Republicans plan to greet him.

Officer Breen Captures Man and Booze in Mountain Stop

Customs officials under Jack Breen captured Manuel Sandoval in the Tres Hermanos Mountains last Saturday. They seized 286 pints of tequila, 24 quarts of tequila, 1 quart of wine, 36 gallons of alcohol, and a U S Springfield rifle. Sandoval faced Judge McKeyes with bond set at 1000 dollars and awaits transfer to state authorities for possession of a deadly weapon while armed with booze. This marks his second offense.

Deming Chamber Urges Support for National Guard Training

A August 2 1924 resolution from Deming Chamber of Commerce calls on local employers to release National Guard members from August 17 to 31 for a fifteen day Fort Bliss Texas encampment. It notes two NM units stationed in Deming and frames training as vital to community state and national security. The document bears signatures and approvals from chamber officers and local officials.

Banta Again Taken Into Custody Near Deming

Ross D Banta, linked to Fay Krupp and 26 liquor cases with two pistols, was recaptured by U S Marshal and a deputy near the Arizona line at a ranch 100 miles southwest of Deming. Previously arrested in 1921 and bonded in El Paso, he jumped bail. A federal warrant for transporting liquor while armed and a state case bond set at 2500 were noted. Krupp fled earlier, leaving belongings.

Rockwell Transferred to Tucson as Southern Pacific Agent

J. D. Rockwell, six months after becoming Southern Pacific agent in this city, is moved to Tucson Arizona, a posting considered the division’s best. He will be succeeded by an unnamed appointee, while J. A. McClure moves to Santa Barbara as assistant freight and passenger agent. Rockwell praises Deming and laments leaving a hospitable, pleasant community.

Y. P. U. Meeting and August Fundraising Plans

Cavalry Enjoys Informative Guard Mount Camp Hike

National Guard of Deming reports a enjoyable two day hike near Swarts ahead of fort Bliss two week encampment beginning August 17. Cadets pitched pup tents, practiced at 100 and 200 yards with Captain Sage leading an exercise that included a mock battle and rapid fire drills. George Walker scored ten bullseyes, others posted good marks, and soldiers gained valuable instruction before weary journeys home.

The grounds around the court house and jail are praised as very beautiful with a well kept lawn. Under Jas E Dieudonne’s supervision, diverse flowers thrive and a large truck garden near the court house grows corn beans squash cucumbers watermelons melons and peppers in the southwest section.

Fishermen Find Lake Elusive on Weekend Trip

L Dutcher and W B Stevens traveled to Elephant Butte Dam last week returning Sunday. They fished sea bass black bass crappie carp cat and litt le perch without success. They travelled via Mesilla Park spending two days and praised the roads noting five rough miles near Hot Springs. They used about 10.5 gallons of gas.

Doctor Wamel Dies in Barn After Heart Failure

Dr John H Wamel aged 4 years died of heart failure at a ranch west of Deming while tending hay with Harry L McRoberts. He collapsed in a stall manger, was moved outside, and died before medical help arrived. An inquest returned a verdict of death by heart failure. Car Stolen From Art Dwyer Before California Trip

Art Dwyer planned to leave with his family for California by auto but had his Buick 16 stolen Tuesday night from his garage. Sheriff Smyer joined the chase and traced the vehicle toward El Paso, with authorities and federal agencies enlisted. If the car is not recovered, the family will delay their departure until next Monday to catch a train.

Birchfield v Birchfield suits over pecuniary settlement
