A Washington wire reports Secretary Lane endorses Plan B for power from a dam now in prospect. The item notes strong support and potential project momentum amid mixed reactions and unspecified timing.
Secretary Lane and Director Davis approved the Elep ant Butte power project and high line canal through El Paso, with a Washington board of engineers to decide feasibility. Local committees led by George H. Baron and A. Burgess push the plan, seeking US backing and power rights for Deming and the Mimbres Valley. Judge Br. P. Barnes of Albuquerque, a Republican leader, visited Deming during the state's southern tour.
In Hondale four orchards on Keel Taylor Br ickler and Bernwick ranches have already produced peaches valued over 2000 dollars. Prices range from six to ten cents per fruit and total crop appears to reach about 7500 dollars this year. Tomato blight in the area is reported arrested, improving crop prospects and livestock condition. Harry Hyatt departs for El Paso to take a bank position.
At Luxor, five bids were submitted Monday night for a new school to replace the burned building east of town. The contract was awarded to William Casto with a bid of 92202. Other bidders included W W Barracks C J Jones Gibson Hines Lumber Co and A F Venter. The 80 pupil capacity structure will be built at the east end of town.
W. W. Wilcox, manager of the Majestic theatre, announces a revised main event for next Tuesday night August 8. Round Norman and Kid Woolfolk, two 138-pounders from the 24th infantry, will headline a ten round bout with Butler and Harrison kept in reserve. The card also includes a four-round rematch between Kid Waldon and Young Speedball and a battle royal featuring Mexican and negro fighters from Deming and Columbus.
Rev. Stephen H. Green of Middletown Cann. died at his White Plains home last Friday and was buried in Middletown on Sunday. His widow and four children survive. Reverend S. B. Green of Deming received word of the death.
Dr F L Schneider from Albuquerque surveyed Deming district preparations to meet dipping regulations. Cattlemen have installed cement dipping vats and appa pens with holding pens for draining fluid. These measures aim to eradicate the unhealthy disease quickly, shortening the past multi year effort.
Montana Senate on Wednesday ratified the woman suffrage amendment to the federal constitution by an 8 to 1 vote, following the lower house’s unanimous approval the previous day. Mrs. Smith Stone returned from Palomas Hot Springs where she spent her vacation and will soon wrap up her work in the women’s department of the W.O. She will then move to South Dakota to lead the girls' home economics department at the state university.
Sherman appointed last week to draw up work plans for the Tuna County Community Service association met Tuesday night and elected officers. Fred Sherman is president with A A Temke, Frank L Nordhaus, Rev K A Moulder, and C J Fells in officers positions. The group asked local societies to co operate, and discussed power generation near Elephant Butte with plans to bring a government study and cross county data to engineers. The luncheon next week was organized with Capt Clyde Earl Ely in charge and bread from Deming Roller Mills served to attendees.
Government control of telephone and telegraph lines ended at midnight as Postmaster General Burleson and President Wilson ordered a return to private ownership. The Postal Telegraph Co's officers faced removals for alleged interference, with intrastate rates set to stay for four months unless altered by state commissions. Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph reports no changes in service or personnel expected.
During June the Interior Department restored access to over 750000 acres of public lands previously withdrawn for coal classification. The lands, located in Colorado North Dakota and Utah, plus nearly 400 acres added to public water reserves bring the total set aside to 226681 acres mainly for stock water on the public range.
The 12th cavalry arrived in Deming after camp at Faywood on their return from Silver City to Columbus. Soldiers swam at a pool closed to civilians, then competed in mounted wrestling, tug of war, and races at Turner Park with over 80 dollars in prize money. Privates Holley and Gilbert showcased sharpshooting, followed by swimming contests at the W C Co 3. A War Camp Community Service dance at the armory capped the event. Mrs LeRoy Hon and granddaughter Lucile Watkins expect back from Evansville to Chicago this week.
William M Harrison died instantly in a flash during a storm at the Browning ranch east of town. The only mark on the body was a bruise by his left eye, likely from hitting the ground. Survived by widow, three daughters, and brother Charles Harrison. Born in Kentucky, aged 81. Funeral services held at Rawson parlors by Rev W E Foulka with interment at Mountain View Cemetery.

G B Kelley manager of a Singer Sewing agency loses his brother A B Kelley who died in Bees ville Texas just hours before G B and family arrived home. Deceased had been ill and died a week after arriving at Beaverville. Body sent to Lake Charles Louisiana for burial. Survived by widow and four children.
Bennie Wray, Weld's fountain mixologist, debuts a new line of drink substitutes crafted from cotton. Samples fill Fields' window, attracting crowds as the sight tempts shoppers toward the fountain. Some cotton is raw and natural, others tarnished with nuts, and the substitutes are praised for appearance though not claimed to match real ice cream flavor.
Fort Sumner land owners Saturday voted a bond issue of 400000 to complete the dam and canals for irrigation of the Pecos valley district. The 5000 acre district is among the state’s most fertile. Past private attempts failed for lack of capital. the issue aims to create a permanent efficient irrigation system for the district.
