Denver dispatch in the St Louis Globe Demorat April 14 outlines a plan to mobilize Rocky Mountain states to attract 10 000 or more settlers. Led by E B Field Jr of Mountain States Telephone the campaign aims for May launch with Western lawmakers in Washington and a Denver meeting after adjournment.

Walnut growing project eyed in Mimbres valley

Zach D. Davis, formerly of Dundee Oregon, has bought land in the Red Mountain area and will plant a large number of English walnut trees. He plans neighbors to join, with one farmer estimating forty acres. Davis previously managed a 200 acre Oregon walnut grove valued at $3000 per acre. He believes Mimbres valley provides ideal conditions and will start soon after returning from El Paso.

Man Walks Across Continent Twice From Ukiah to New York

Harvey Thoren, veteran of the Philippine War, treks west to east then returns on foot. He left Ukiah on March 12 1912 under Ukiah Republican Press patrons and local real estate men and reached Deming on the return trip Friday. He carries a mayoral letter from New York Mayor W J Gaynor to San Francisco Mayor James Rolph Jr praising his endurance and noting plans to walk again. Thoren spoke at the Comet Theater thanking Deming residents and I N troops of the 13th Cavalry. He funds travel by selling the Police Gazette in towns he visits. Also noted is H W Bixler completing an adobe engine house on the H W Leater farm.

New Mexico Road Bonds Authorized for Highway Fund

The New Mexico Highway Commission requests the governor to direct the treasurer to sell bonds to the highest cash bidder to raise 200000 dollars for the construction and maintenance of the state highway system. Correction on Mimbres Hot Springs contract partners

The April Lith notes a correction: Graham and Clancy and Bracken and Carroll were only sub contractors for the Mimbres Hot Springs alterations. The main contract for the project was awarded to L. H. McNett and A. C. Powell.

Sixteen New Buyers Invest in Deming Land Sale

C E Miesse of Mimbres Valley Alfalfa Farms Co arrived in Deming with sixteen prospectors. twenty of forty acre tracts sold at $100 an acre including water rights and initial alfalfa seeding. A first well tested 1200 gallons per minute at 58 feet, with further wells planned as development expands toward ten thousand acres tributary to Deming.

Better Babies Exhibit Planned at San Diego Exposition

A proposed Better Babies contest linked to eugenics prompts questions on how many New Mexico babies qualify under the rules, with scores for body, head, and psychological traits. President Collier and Mrs. Gertrude Lane discuss displaying results or outlining plans at San Diego in 1915.

Postal Savings Depositories Introduced Here

The postal savings plan, enacted June 25 1910, began operating in Deming on April 1 1912. Any person over ten may open an account, a married woman may save independently, and deposits range from ten cents to five hundred dollars with 2 percent annual interest. Postmaster Pennington notes rising deposits as public awareness grows. Bank of Deming serves as the depository for state post offices including Santa Rita and Hurley.

International Mix-Up Ends With Slop Bucket Fight

Felipe Reyes, in a rare lapse, attempted to pursue Skeet Henley after drinks. Skeet struck with a bar bucket, denting the vessel and splashing contents on Skeet’s white jacket and apron. Felipe is resting. Mrs. Roy Howard and her husband left for Silver City for several days.
