Splendid Session of Presbytery Draws to Close

A Rio Grande Presbytery meeting closed at noon Thursday after a turn as Rev J D Henry opened events Tuesday. Samuel Mayne of Rincon was elected moderator and discussions focused on presbytery business and Presbyterial activities at the Methodist tabernacle. Delegates were hosted with luncheons and a joint meeting at the Presbyterian church featuring speakers on women’s work and missionary topics.

Wandering Walter Arrested by Federal Agents in Albuquerque

The Wanderwell Tour of the World party including Wanderwell and two companions were jailed in Albuquerque after federal agents detained them. Wanderwell faces passport fraud charges claiming he is German, while his associates are accused of selling pictures without a license. Wanderwell asserts vendetta by a former employee and promises to clear himself. Sherlock Family Returns To Deming From Dallas Transfer

Major Sherlock and Mrs. Sherlock with daughter Corona return to Deming from Dallas where he was stationed at a Public Service hospital. He has been ordered transferred to Fort Bayend. The family resumes residence in Deming as friends greet their return.

All Officers Re elected By Fire Department

The members of the fire department re elected officers for another year at a city hall meeting Monday night. Henry Raithel was president, Mieree Hughes chief, Tom McCarty assistant chiefs, Dan Wathaway captain, Bud Thurhes secretary and treasurer. After the meeting the department accepted Mrs Henry Raithel invitation for a dinner at the Raithel home later that night.

Social Happenings Bridge Parties Highlight Season

Mr and Mrs Garnet Gibson hosted a large community house bridge party Friday evening with twenty tables. Prizes went to Miss Irvin Mrs Sande A Bur jdick and Professor Martin for high scores among ladies and gentlemen. Receiption decor featured pink and white and sweet peas with an elaborate supper after games. Further bridge events occurred at the Sanders home on South Gold last Saturday and at the Curtis home on Monday with Mrs Doyle and Mrs Sree winning high scores. A large afternoon bridge at the community house yielded yellow and white decorations and prizes to Mrs Eugene Austin and Mrs Grorn A Shepard. Invitations for a bridge party were issued by Mr and Mrs Morehead for tomorrow evening.

Big Round-Up at Fort Bayard by War Veterans

The Fort Bayard Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars will stage a big round-up the first week in May. The arena grand stand and bleachers are under construction. Wallace Witney, pioneer cowboy, will prepare the program. Prizes totaling over $1000 will be awarded to winners.

N S Finch Pioneer Miner Dies at 64 in West Second Street

Nathan N Finch, a noted mining man in the region, died last Saturday at age 64 and was buried Monday after a funeral at the Methodist church. Survived by widow and six children, he arrived in 1881, worked at Lake Valley, Located the Miles Standish and Horn Silver mines, shipped a two and a half ton font ore, and later prospected manganese in Little Floridas before retiring.

Acting Governor Grants Unconditional Pardons for Mrs Doster

Acting Governor Duckworth pardoned Mrs Doster on the recommendation of 11 of 12 jurors and the penitentiary commissioners. The former common law wife of Capt Wade Doster was sentenced to 3 to 4 years for murder after pleading second degree. The petition argued her punishment was sufficient and her health warranted release. Frank Doster of Pasadena, a former Kansas Supreme Court chief justice, pleaded for clemency.

Whittier Named Traveling Auditor Under New Act

A. G. Whittier will be reappointed as traveling auditor when the traveling auditor act of the fifth legislature takes effect June 15. The fifth legislature shifted appointive power from the state auditor to the governor, requiring Governor Mechem to name the traveling auditor. Whittier was told he would continue in the office after the change.

Interchange Arrangements For San Diego Passenger Traffic

The San Diego and Arizona Railway announces completed arrangements with Southern Pacific and Santa Fe for an interchange of passenger traffic at San Diego. Effective May 1 tariffs apply for one way and round trips, allowing eastern travelers to reach Los Angeles or San Francisco without extra cost.
