G W Weedman Dies in Well at Hondale Scott Place

A Hondale community mourns G Wilbur Weedman entombed after a cave‑in at Dr Wa Scott’s well site. Rescue efforts spanned the night with volunteers and neighbors aiding. Weedman, born near Bristol Indiana in 187? and aged 39, left a widow Leora and son John. Interment was at Mountainview cemetery.

Mrs Dexter Hosts Suburban Club Tea and Plans Event

Mrs. G W Dexter hosted the Suburban Club on March 22 with about 25 members attending. Demonstrations on acre farm construction impressed attendees, and families will be invited to Mrs Geo Bumpus home for a future event. Refreshments were served and the next meeting is set for April 26 at Mrs H H Jacobs residence. A cinema feature, Charlie Ray in Peaceful Valley, played at the Majestic theater with matinees on both days.

Ex Soldiers Eligible for New Farm Lands in New Mexico

Ex servicemen of the world war may secure a homestead in 17 000 acres of public land in Sandoval County New Mexico. Official plat transmission to the Santa Fe land office sets a 63 day entry window after filing, with a 62 day general opening following Public Resolution No 29 of February 14 1920. The rolling mesa offers excellent grass and prospect for settlement.

Mrs Cooper Hosts Baptist Church Ladies Meeting

The Baptist Woman’s Missionary Association met at Mrs C H Cooper’s country home for a program on Christian Americanization led by Mrs C H Siler. Readings, talks, and a $12.30 collection followed with refreshments served by Mesdauvas Cooper and Strickland.

A Portland area customer plans a 100000 chicken season at the electric Henacrea farm. The facility now uses 33.6 kilowatts for heating and 3 kilowatts for lighting with a 20 kilowatt DC motor for emergencies.

New Fiction and Nonfiction Arrivals at DeJuing Public Library

Explosion at Bottling Works in Columbus Wrecks Plant

A boiler explosion at the bottling works in Columbus wrecked the building injuring Capt. Arthur Bloch and A. G. Hicks who were inside. Hicks and others rushed to a hospital where Bloch’s condition remained critical amid severe burns and a broken leg. A nearby Mexican woman also hurt. several buildings sustained damage. a small fire was controlled by the chemical engine.

Albuquerque Eyes One of Five Federal Hospitals

The Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and local clubs will push to secure one of five War Risk Insurance Department federal hospitals, with a $12 million, about $2.4 million per hospital plan. Albuquerque cites climate and size as strengths while a five-physician federal committee studies optimal site locations.

Truth Seekers Meet at Home of Mrs Matthews

The Truth Seekers class of the Methodist Sunday school gathered at Mrs E H Matthews home for a meeting led by their teacher. The session opened with scripture and prayer, minutes were read, reports showed care for class interests, and many visits to the sick and strangers were noted. The group, formerly the Philathea class, adopted the new name Truth Seekers and enjoyed a social hour with refreshments.

Community Service to Open Pool May 7

The board met at Fred Sherman’s office to select pool attendants. It was unanimously decided to retain Mr. Hughes as pool operator for another season. The secretary-treasurer reports the group is healthy and plans improvements and new features for the community.

Experiment Blends Art and Tech in Film Production

In the Charles Ray studio during filming of Peaceful Valley a new experiment merged art and technical departments to run in tandem with clear, harmonious results. Chamber Session Plans Community Meeting and Highway Posting

The Deming Luna County Chamber of Commerce held a delayed monthly meeting with most of the board present. Committees on finance membership and colonization projects were appointed and a public meeting for April 6 at the community house was scheduled to discuss vital local matters. Representatives of the Atlantic and Pacific highway were present and agreed the chamber would post signs in Luna County as the road routing proceeds.

Maccabees to Institute Review Here April 7th

Mrs Lillie R Moores state manager of the Woman's Benefit Association of the Maccabees returns to Deming to start a local review. The WB A formed October 1 1892 now has 276000 members with a $14000000 reserve fund. They aid home country and religion and support charity civic improvement and women and children causes. Deming Residents Attend Grand Opera in El Paso

A group of Deming residents traveled to El Paso to attend grand opera including Mesdamee Moir Pollard Martin Poulke Young Thompson Mahoney Laura Hall Will Hall Omar Gibson and Misses Theresa Clark Marquite Young Katherine Shepard and Alice Hall Mrs Ament visited her daughter Mrs Sam Watkins and plans to join the El Paso reception and opera. Mrs Watkins hosted a reception for her mother and Miss Genevieve Bannett who will wed Jos Boone Worsham on the 12th. Mrs Hadson and Mrs Albert Field also went to El Paso for the event and the grand opera before returning.

Wm Elliott Dies Near Hachita England born sand man

Wm Elliott well known sand man living near Hachita died Friday March 16 funeral was held Saturday at Hachita officiated by Mrs W E Bennett. Interment at Hachita. Born in Hampshire England April 16 1866 he was a resident of New Mexico for 40 years. He leaves a wife and several relatives listed in the notice.

The town hosts a masquerade dance at the armory with dancing at 8 30 and prizes for best costumes. Local notes include pastors attending district conferences in Toyah Texas and several residents visiting El Paso and California, with social events and civic notices throughout Deming.

Mennonites May Come to Mimbres

Representatives from the Demieg Chamber of Commerce met in El Page with J. F. P. Wiebe, a Mennonite farming colony representative, to learn land needs and offer aid in settling Mimbres valley farming and living conditions. They heard emigrants plan to enter Mexico while Northwest U S colonists seek new homes in the Southwest for a milder climate. The talks yielded valuable information and the chamber will continue preliminary outreach to interest the Mennonites in this district.

Angelus Oil Co announces delivery of extra heavy 6 inch casing to complete a second well. The existing well casing buckled under pressure, but was sidetracked without incident. Company has negotiations for more Luna county acreage and may drill another well in a new section before finishing the current one.

Methodist Sunday School Sets Attendance Record

The Methodist Sunday school drew 276 attendees the largest since Sco ville meetings, beating the prior 270. In the intercity contest, Las Cruces leads Deming 107 to 103 in Sunday school attendance as of last Sunday.

Champion Swimmer from Antwerp Olympic trip visits Deming

Frances Cawells Schroth, famed Pacific Coast swimmer and former tutor of Misis, recalls her summer abroad as one of the American representatives at the Antwerp Olympics. She and 250 men and 16 women competed in swimming events, with Schroth entering meter races and aiding the team as a key figure, helping to set world records in relays.
