Farmers Seek Substitute Crops for Wheat Allotments in Indiana
Indiana farmers facing wheat allotment limits explore substitute small grains. Purdue agronomist K E Beeson notes winter oats and winter barley are winter hardy only in southern Indiana, with limited survival north of the Ohio River. In central and northern areas, winter rye or spring oats emerge as logical alternates, while Balbo barley faces seed shortages and rye contamination concerns. Spelt appears along the Michigan line as a rare alternative with similar yield to oats.
