Delphi-Deer Creek schools opened with 688 students after a brief session for preliminary registration. Lloyd Wagoner replaces Marion Robbins as history and dramatics teacher. Wagoner, from Indian Springs, formerly taught in Hayden Indiana. Robbins leaves to rejoin Lincoln Loan Co at Painesville. Fifty four new students and seventy seven progress to high school. Room 1 hosts forty four beginners and Room 2 ten.
Delphi city council approved an appropriation ordinance lowering the tax rate by five cents to 1.26 per 100 of taxable property and setting 1.50 per poll for general fund and 9 cents per 100 for park purposes. General fund 32,535 and park fund 3,490. A public budget hearing had no opposition. An additional appropriation for the current year was adopted, needing 1,700 for the general fund. A petition seeks election of George Todd to the Consolidated Schools board.
The Lowell Tribune prints a notice from H O Burnham, township trustee, warning poor residents that aid will not cover gas for autos or dog feed. He declares he will investigate every aid call and urges those with automobiles or dogs to dispose of them. The township will help genuine cases but condemns abuse.
County superintendent C A Bailey will discuss The Battle of Tippecanoe at the Carroll County Historical Society meeting Friday night September 25 at the public library. Frank Lyon presides. other local history talks are planned and school history classes are invited.
Ratification of Carroll Lodge 174 and Flora Lodge 526 consolidation noted with R C Rockwood Grand Master and Mrs Rockwood as honor guests. Victoria Rebekah lodge served the banquet while A W Wolever spoke on Odd Fellowship. Members from nearby towns attended and a county meeting was announced for September 26.
The Camden Soy Bean and Seed Co. secured the county coal contract with a bid of 4.10 dollars per ton, beating Farm Bureau Store Frank S Snoeberger and Delphi Ice and Coal Co. Other actions include accepting Russell Seward road in Washington township extending John E Swartz road in Clay township and appointing B F Murphy as road superintendent in Democrat township. County land sold to Henrietta Downham for 300 dollars including about eight acres of low lands west of town.
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bradshaw depart Delphi for New York and will sail early next week for a two month tour of Europe. They travel with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bradshaw and plan visits to Germany England Scotland and Ireland.
Seventh annual Hollaway family reunion scheduled for Sunday September 13 1931 at Kennard's Camp. Relatives are urged to attend.
Herbert A. Graham Grand Lecturer will visit Delphi Chapter No 21 R and A M on Thursday evening. Inspection in MK M and P M degrees will be held. All members urged to be present.
The Carroll County Council of Religious Education will host a Sunday meeting at the Camden Baptist Church next Sunday, September 13, at 2 pm. The new Sunday School standards effective July 1 will be presented, with plans for a county convention in October and a teachers training school this winter.
Coach Paul R. Lostutter announces next week the first basketball practice. The squad will form small groups of seven or eight and limit to two nights per week until October. The season starts November 6 with a drill emphasis on fundamentals and a two-season plan. The Oracles schedule twelve home games and eight away. Notable opponents include Camden, Decatur, Flora Wiley, Terre Haute, and Franklin. Games listed from November to January include Camden, Windfall, Rochester, Marion, Lebanon, Peru, Decatur, Jefferson of Lafayette, Rushville, and Dees.
Mrs. Mary Robinson aged 77 died Tuesday evening at 30 o'clock at her daughter Mrs. Earl Stewart's home in Rock Creek township. She was the widow of Civil War veteran Hezekiah Robinson. Surviving are her daughter, a granddaughter, and a brother Will.

The Christians clinched the Sunday School League title after the Catholics defeated the Baptists Tuesday night. Baptists were hampered by the absence of pitcher Rule, while Crosby limited Baptists to three hits. Christians will receive gold baseballs from A G Spalding and Co. Attendance and eligibility rules boosted totals as the season closed. Final standings show Christians atop, with Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, and others following.
Albert Holloway a farmer near Yeoman will travel to California for a three week trip with Estella Ferrier. They left Yeoman immediately for the journey and will stay at Holloway’s country home one mile west of Yeoman during the visit.
Thirty Christmas bags prepared by Mrs. C. Schnepp and clubs across Carroll County were packed on Thursday for soldiers in hospitals. The county quota was filled and bags will be sent to their destination for eventual distribution.
The American Utilities Development Corp proposes a power and resort project on the Eel River in Putnam County Indiana mid way between Brazil and Greencastle on the southwest edge of the county. The dam would create a storage basin over 10 000 acres with a shoreline near 200 miles and a water capacity above 21 billion cubic feet. The site is within about 50 miles of Indianapolis and 40 miles of Terre Haute and the dam is planned to be about 220 miles long and nine miles wide.
Carroll County trims the yearly tax levy from 52 to 33 cents next year, a 19 cent reduction, with 22 cents for the general fund, 7 cents for gravel road repair, and 3 cents for Carrollton bridge bonds. The total budget exceeds this year’s despite the cuts, and the levy will be forwarded to the state tax board.
Total enrollment in Carroll County schools reaches 3298 for the first semester. Figures compiled by county superintendent C A Bailey. Delphi defity schools included in the county total with an enrollment of 688. The enrollment table appears on the 66 basis unless noted otherwise.
A county conference of the Christian Circles convenes at Rockfield next Wednesday September 16 with sessions at 10 A M including an afternoon and night program and a 6 o'clock banquet. The theme is The Local Church and World Fellowship. Local movers Grimm and Sons relocate to street addresses Thursday and Friday with reception after Friday.
Federal prohibitions officers arrested Carroll County residents last Friday night in a raid. Charles Johnson of the Carrollton Inn John Vianco of Delphi and Mrs Goldie Smith of Delphi were jailed on $1 000 bonds after pleading not guilty before U S Commissioner Norris R Parks of Lafayette Mrs Smith posted a temporary bond and faces a September 14 hearing for permanent bond and federal court appearance Johnson's bond was posted by Floyd Sterrett and F M
Delphi Journal reports federal agents posing as insurance agents recruit locals by vacationing at Bass Lake. They claim health rest and thirst for home beer, then seek to recruit bootleggers. The insiders discover the ruse and distrust grows across communities.
Wood and Vianco were released on bond by Ida M. Sayers and Laura Redding. Johnson and Vianco held overnight in Lafayette jail after raids synchronized with events in Lafayette and Monticello. Three spots raided in Monticello. twenty taken at Lafayette. thirty six investigators led by Thomas W. Scott conducted the operation with federal warrants. A night session allowed bonding for some. others remained jailed. A large crowd gathered around the Lafayette lock-up. home brew caches were reported destroyed in multiple raids.
