Retiring baker recalls wartime flour substitutes and postwar bloom
Bernie Hefleng ends 43 years in the baking trade on November 1 noting the business is healthier now. He recalls World War I flour shortages with white rice flour and dark barley flour as substitutes, and says today shortages affect homemakers more than bakers. The piece also covers bank officials, nurse-led infant paralysis clinics, and social notes of locals including Sid Thompson and Tyrone Power sharing a dinner, plus Kay Francis visiting Hogan McCormick in California and a lost navy pin found after decades.
