Drought Ravages Indiana and Midwest Farmland Amid Meager Showers

Meager showers dampen hopes as Indiana confronts drought rivaling 1895. Oats and wheat suffer severe damage, corn stunted, wheat output forecast down by 31 million bushels. Funeral Rites Saturday for Drowning Victim Roscoe Downham

Roscoe Downham 19 son of Ross L. Downham of Deer Creek near Globe Arizona drowned at San Carlos Lake while riding with a 30 car caravan en route to California. Funeral to be held Saturday 2 30 pm at Rock Creek Lutheran church. He was a Deer Creek high school graduate of 1933 and a former basketball team member and musician. He leaves two sisters Eva Jones Camden and Evelyn at home.

Farmers urged to register wheat acreage planted in county

Farmers in Carroll County who could not meet minimum wheat acreage must register planted totals with the county association before field inspections. Filing Form W-37 allows planting less than minimum without contract violation and preserves eligibility for 1935 payments. Dean J H Skinner of Purdue outlines the procedure and notes the need to notify the wheat section if planting less.

Lamont Creson Near Death at Burlington

Lamont Creson a former Burlington postmaster and longtime county citizen is reported critically ill today. A prominent figure in state literary and journalistic circles he previously contributed to leading magazines and newspapers and was once on the Indianapolis News staff. An unrelated action to quiet title was filed today by Susie V. Dasher against Sarah C. Redding et al.

The Delphi baseball team will host Lafayette K. of Paine at the new city park diamond Sunday at 2 30 p m. Jack Gee is expected to make his first mound appearance for the locals.

Parker Addresses Large Crowd at Baccalaureate

Rev. Harry Parker delivered the baccalaureate address at the Presbyterian church last Sunday evening. Forty-seven Delphi high school graduates were honored. The service featured organ and violin preludes, a caps and gowns procession, a quartet, and scriptures read by ministers Wilbur Day Dodson and benediction by Howard Jenkins.

Frechette Linked To Dillinger News Visit At Delphi

Evelyn Frechette apparently spent a few hours in Delphi after Dillinger escaped. A local grocer reports she entered the store with two male companions and demanded a newspaper while the men waited in the car. Charles Stewart says the trio resembled Dillinger’s band of associates. Union services are set for Sunday at the Delphi Christian church with Rev. Dodson delivering the sermon.

Forty seven Delphi seniors to receive diplomas tonight

Seventy second annual commencement exercises at the armory will begin at 8 o clock. Jack Grimm leads the class with Betty Dyer Mabel Campbell and Charles Faucett as officers. Judge Fred C Bale of Cleveland will deliver the principal address Tomorrow s Citizens Today. Supt Amick and Principal Smith will present diplomas and prizes.

Ruling on Tie Vote Sets Stage for Delegates

State Board of Election Commissioners rules no delegate is elected in the fifth district due to a tie between Fred Miller and William Funkhouser. County Clerk Wilbur Lane calls a county meeting of delegates at the courthouse to elect a chairman who will appoint a district delegate. The board notes no prior ruling on such ties and emphasizes non partisan status.

Popejoy wins big ten mile in 9 33 at Purdue carnival

Charley Popejoy former Delph track star and Purdue athlete captured first place in the Big Ten Track carnival. He and rival Williams Slocum of Minnesota battled for the two mile race, exchanging leads in a late sprint before Popejoy finished about 15 yards ahead in 9 33 as Slocum trailed.

Reid McCain Seeks Indiana Secretary of State Aide Race

Reid McCain formerly of Delphi announces candidacy for Secretary of State at the Republican State Convention on June 5. Carroll County to Receive 21000 From State Tax Distributions

Carroll county schools will receive about 21000 as their share of state gross income tax distributions on July 1. The total statewide distribution is about 4 million across all counties, based on teaching units, with exact July totals pending the education board’s unit allotments. In January Carroll county received 21457.80 for 105 units, or 204.36 per unit.

Presbyterians Plan June Vacation School in Delphia

Beginning Monday June fourth the Presbyterian church of Delphia will run a four week daily vacation church school for grades 1 through 8. Carroll County final reports from township assessors show total personal property valuations at 2 361 370 up from 2 351 700 last year. Auto counts fell by 145 with a small per car value rise, while horses sheep and hogs posted marked gains in valuation and quantity.

County Tax Review to Convene June 4th

The Carroll County Board of Tax Review will convene on Monday June 4 to hear taxpayer complaints, equalize valuations and take action within its jurisdiction. The board includes Assessor Orvel Schock Treasurer Robert Johnson and Auditor J L Whiteman with two court appointees Joe Watson and Chas Jones. Raymond Gibbs of Clinton county has been assigned to this county as case work supervisor under the F E R A. He will aid in selecting families for relief under the new program. The rural plan aims to restore dependent families to independence with stricter requirements and fewer aid recipients. Road work and other projects are included. John Lyon of Rock Creek township files for divorce alleging his wife drank excessive coffee and aspirin, and wore a wig. He claims she fell and broke her arm while intoxicated on coffee and aspirin, and that she misrepresented her age and appearance, posing as a 47 year old woman with auburn hair.
