Residents of Clay Ross and Owen townships in Clinton county will vote on joining to consolidate schools. If approved, high school students now going to Rossville would stay there and grade schools would be affected. Legal advertising on the measure is expected within two weeks.
Neighbors and friends of Henry Fair of route 1 Delphi plowed 80 acres at his farm last Monday using fourteen plows for the aid of the hospitalized man. Mr Fair has returned home and is improving. Helpers at the Fair farm included Frank Hanaway Hi Ellis John Scott Robert R Scott Joe Ellis Lewis Crowell Cloyd Crown Ralph Davis Lloyd Mikesell Tom Armstrong Morris Duncan Gene Conrad Lewis Smith and Merle Mullendore.
Baccalaureate services for the 1957 graduating class of Delphi high school will be held Sunday May 19 at 3 p m at the Delphi Methodist church. Rev Forest W Howell will deliver the sermon. Invocations by Rev C G Alldredge scrip ture by Rev D A Longenecker benediction by Rev J Franklin Arthur. High school chorus to sing Ave Verum and I Shall Not Want. Lena Hannell to preside at organ Wes Humphrey to direct chorus.
Dr and Mrs C C Crampton and Dr and Mrs George Wagoner traveled to Huntington on Wednesday for the 11th Councilor meeting of the State Medical Society.
New officers for the 1957 58 school year were elected by the seniors juniors and sophomores. Senior officers include Paul Vollenweider as president and Tom Merrell as vice president. Virginia Fisher is secretary JoAnn Coomey treasurer Kay Clawson is student council representative. Juniors elect Robert Randolph president Jerry Johnson vice president Joyce Gushwa secretary Bonnie Wilson treasurer Gwen Benner student council. Sophomores elect David Beale president Jane Rodgers vice president Alice Berninger secretary treasurer Frank Lachenmaier student council.
Birth announcements list Diane Ruth Landis daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Landis of Delphi born Saturday at Home hospital. Robert Allen Brandow son of Mr and Mrs Robert Brandow of Danville born May 3. Myrtle Wife noted as a grandmother. Also listed are daughters and sons born May 8 at Memorial and St Elizabeth hospitals to families including Harness Radnor Don Shadwick Bringhurst and Morris Butler Bringhurst with ties to Frankfort Delphi and Danville.
A three month old pup about ten inches high with black short hair white feet and a white tail tip has disappeared from Delphi after being locked up following a bite by Cheryl Talbert five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Talbert. The dog was in the pound chained apart from others when intruders released it with other dogs. Anyone spotting the dog should notify police immediately to avoid rabies treatment for the girl.
Delphi won the 42nd annual RMD track meet and oratorical contest, edging Rensselaer 51 to 50 1 3, Monticello 35 2 3. Virginia Peterson won oratory, Nancy Rule first in humorous readings, Dick Scharf first in dramatic readings. Both Delphi and Rensselaer earned five points and will receive trophies.
Bill Million a longtime local pianist and accompanist for the high school chorus received a silver loving cup Friday night at the high school band and chorus festival. Dr Merton Utgaard of Ball State Teachers College conducted the band as a large crowd watched. Mrs John Klepinger led a cornet trio with Jerry Daniels Dick Klepinger and George Rogers while a clarinet quartet of Jim Blythe Elsie Echler Virginia Peterson and Carole Welch performed.
Ardis and Lola Landes settle their claim for eighteen thousand five hundred dollars against the estate of Ella M Tyner for two thousand dollars. George Duffy serves as administrator and Watson C McCormick as attorney.
The Delphi Lions selected Terry Shepard of Lafayette Home Hospital room 102 as Cheer Club member of the week. Terry, son of Mr and Mrs Robert Shepard, underwent surgery last week and is expected to return home on route 2 Delphi later this week. Friends are urged to send cards and small gifts during the week.
Tom Pugh, assistant to Ken Pyle and local Soil Conservation District Technician, resigns to join the Newton County Soil District at Kentland. The Pughs have bought a home in Goodland and will move later this month. He begins duties in the last week of May.
County Auditor Hoy Musselman urged the County Council to meet May 28 and 29 to consider additional appropriations totaling 109919.70. Requests include 11519.70 from revenue funds for per diem pay, 981.40 for jail oil heating, 140 for a jail mower, and 1200 for county home patient care. Bridge fund requests total 51000 with 27000 for Bicycle bridge, 6000 for Wolf bridge, 4000 for Anderson, and 14000 for Sugar Creek bridge on the Dayton road. Gas tax additions of 47400 are sought by the highway department.
Miss Shakuntala Govind Sarnaik 26 from Amravati and Miss Adarsh Nalwa 24 from Punjab arrive in Delphi for three weeks under the International Farm Youth Exchange. They will stay with the Schneffs and Planks, observe rural life, and are sponsored by the 4 H Junior Leader Organization and Carroll County Farm Bureau. Both plan social work in women and children, with Sarnaik holding an MA in economics and Nalwa studying home science.
County Treasurer Robert Ferrier announced that 758207.13 dollars were paid into the tax office by the spring tax period ending last Monday. More checks are arriving and the final total is expected near 775000, surpassing 1956 by over 200000 and marking an all-time spring collection high.
Jerry Wagner of Oracle won both high and low hurdles to qualify for the regional meet in Fort Wayne. Delphi sophomore Bill Schock placed fourth in the low hurdle and also qualified. The mile relay team of Blythe Rodkey Woods and Wagner qualified for the state meet as Oracle scored 17 points to finish third in Kokomo.
Ross Tipton the local school superintendent says May 27 will be the last full day for students. Students won t report May 28 while teachers finalize grade cards, then return May 29 at 1 30 to receive report cards. Hot lunch will not be served Monday.
Six teachers resign from Delphi public schools led by coach Robert Gordon. Replacements announced for seven roles, one vacancy not filled. Resignations take staff to states and towns including Alaska Akron Minneapolis and Crawfordsville. Junior Mannies named new Delphi basketball coach. Gordon becomes Owasco principal while remaining Delphi resident.
Monday night the council tackled dogs and the pound relocation to Riley Park, mosquitos, sewers on Monroe and Water streets, sidewalks on Hamilton bridge, and park use bans for bridle paths. It approved a one year $5,000 garbage pickup contract for Joe Myers and moved to cover city officials under workers comp. DelphI Scouts lease and a four way stop at Union and Main tied to fire alarm dispatch were discussed.
Norman V. Skiles, 18, of route 4 Lafayette, escaped with a bloody nose when the Sugar Creek bridge 4.5 miles south of Delphi on the Dayton Road collapsed early Monday. Investigators are unsure if the bridge failed before or after the 1957 auto crossed it as Skiles said he was traveling 60 to 65 mph. The car rolled several times and ended in a plowed field. Dayton road traffic south of the Flora cut-off is detoured until repairs are completed.
A total of 144 students registered for an all night after prom party at the REMC auditorium Saturday. Breakfast was served from 4 to 4 30 am by parent sponsors. Prizes included $10 cash gifts won by a long list of named students and volunteers. Local parents and organizations contributed funds to support the event.
The Gold Crown Clown arrives Thursday afternoon and evening at a Standard Oil Dealers location with balloons and suckers for children.
Members of the No-Name club met at the Presbyterian church to organize the May 19 Divine Worship hour. Carolyn and David Peterson will play organ, Kim Black will give invocation, Pete Furst the Psalter, and several members including Bonnie Jo Wilson Virginia Peterson Alice Preston Marilyn Fisher Nancy Bradshaw Betty Bitler SueAnn Sieber Mary Lou Allen will deliver sermons.
Hillcrest and Monroe Street elementary grades present a musical program Friday at 8 p m in the Delphi Armory. Hillcrest choir four numbers, Monroe Street choir four numbers with solos Connie Keisling and Lonnie Miller. After intermission junior high band three numbers and chorus four songs. No admission charged but free will offering taken.
Ray Kenens, local stock car racer, breaks the Alexandria track record and takes the semi final and feature in a Sunday afternoon event. In Kokomo, Kenens wins the heat but both the semi final and feature are rained out Sunday night.
The city of Delphi orders all dogs quarantined within city limits due to stray dog prevalence and multiple bite reports. Dogs must be restrained or confined to property. Issued by City Health Officer John M Byrne M D on 20-11-1p.
Carroll County Democrat Party Night set for Tuesday evening May 28 at Delphi City Park at 6 30 p m with a cooperative supper honoring Pete and wife Mrs Jackson the county recorder Jackson is a precinct committeeman in Jefferson township A meeting will discuss the 1958 campaign the fish fry and the Young Democrat club County Chairman John Merrell will attend other district meetings on May 21 Committee members from Jackson and Jefferson townships will organize the event All precinct committeemen and women and party officials are invited to attend.
The Delphi Lions Club donates a 12 foot by 3 foot book case to the Delphi Library. The club will host its annual Gas Day on Saturday May 25 at the Bassett and Talbert firm with members manning the station to raise funds for the Lions Club charity fund.
May 24 is designated as beginners day in Delphi Elementary. First graders skip school and are replaced by next year's beginners. Children who turn six on or before November 1, 1957 may enroll. mothers must leave beginners with first grade teachers by 8:45 a.m. and attend a mothers meeting at 9 a.m. Bring birth certificates to the school.
Mr and Mrs Harry Ratcliff entertained several relatives at their home on Sunday in a quiet family gathering with nearby relatives in attendance.
William Lee Robinson aged 20 was sentenced to 2 to 5 years in the Indiana Reformatory after pleading guilty to second degree burglary in Carroll circuit court. He alleged Delphi resident Wilbur Earl Lane instructed him how to enter the Herb Smith building and to share stolen proceeds. Lane later faced an affidavit for receiving stolen property and underwent lie detector testing, which police said indicated Lane was truthful about not breaking in. Lane is a former Herb Smith employee. Rev. Robert Smith accompanied Robinson in court.
Fred Allen 67 of Bringhurst died after his tractor was struck by a truck driven by Walter Delrymple 59 of Flora while traveling south on a bridge over Wildcat at Burlington. Delrymple escaped injury. Allen suffered a skull fracture and died at Memorial hospital Logansport. Funeral rites held at Carter funeral home with burial in Mound cemetery.
Rain postponed Monday practice to Thursday with a backup Friday option. If Wednesday’s group misses its second session it will meet Friday. Any group not yet at its second practice should try Saturday morning at 9 30. Practice is at Pittsburg school diamond. A public meeting for boys parents and friends is Saturday at 7 30 in the high school auditorium.
The Senate Post Office Committee unanimously cleared 12 Indiana postmaster nominations for Senate action. Among those approved was Robert Sieber of Delphi, moving forward in the confirmation process.
