New Tariff Schedule Will Cost Consumer
Indiana residents consumed 343 000 000 pounds of sugar last year and face higher prices if the tariff bill becomes law without changes. Hoosiers would pay about 2 401 000 dollars in added taxes, funds that could pave hundreds of miles of road or build a bridge over the Wabash, while aiding state needs elsewhere. The piece argues the sugar tax would enrich a sugar monopoly and hurts farmers, noting few Indiana farmers grow sugar and much cane is imported from Mexico.
