Noted Carroll County Pioneers and a Fatality Among Children
Reading from left to right are Dr. James Hervey Stewart Samuel G Greenup and James P Dugan. Stewart came to Delphi in 1830 and became county clerk for twenty five years then a lawyer and died in 1880. He wrote the first history of Carroll County to 1872 and several children died in infancy. Greenup and Dugan were early county figures with roles in agriculture industry and church support. Dugan helped run a large packing house and later faced financial decline after 1873 panic. The piece notes a tragic death of the Dugans’ daughter Jennie by a lamp explosion and includes a sworn list of claims for February 1936.
