Banks in Delphi and counties across Indiana adopt a restricted withdrawal plan amid fears of hoarding and cash shortages. The Indiana commission approves measures limiting deposits and checkable funds to five percent of total, with direct implications for savings and business needs.
An evening collision near Deer Creek involved a Plymouth with two men and a woman and the Cassell Fouts car. A baby was thrown from the front seat during the impact but all occupants survived. Deputies traced a Plymouth with license 58482 linked to Thomas Goddard of Indianapolis. the Deer Creek car owner remained involved as officers investigated.
Governor Paul V McNutt signed Indiana’s gross income tax bill allowing a one percent levy on manufacturers and wholesalers and one percent on retailers utilities railroads and others. It is projected to raise about 13.95 million annually and supports budget balancing and teachers wage costs. The law takes effect May 1 with quarterly payments for taxes above ten dollars and annual payments for smaller amounts.
The Colburn Grange will hold a dance on Wednesday evening March 8 in the Grange hall Colburn. Music by the Hoosier Rounders of Lafayette promises classy dance music. Members urge all surrounding clubs to attend and bring friends.
Carroll County thirteen township assessors and deputies began listing all taxable property with a May 1 deadline. Instructions from the state tax board require listing mortgages despite recorder listings and pending legal changes. no real estate will be assessed this year. Deputies named include Mrs Cox and Mrs Margaret Baum in Deer Creek and Mrs Grace Daggy in Monroe.
Pittsburg Pirates claim their fourth victory by defeating Buck Creek 32 to 12. Franklin and Richardson each scored ten points for the Pirates while McKay led Buck Creek with seven points.
A. B. Crampton veteran soldier and editor founder of the Delphi Citizen will observe his ninetieth birthday on Wednesday March 8 1933 at the home of his daughter Mrs Henry B Wilson in Delphi. His son and daughters and grandchildren will be present and the article recounts Cramp ton’s Civil War service and his role in printing the Vicksburg Citizen on wallpaper after the fall of Vicksburg.
At Burrows Presbyterian Church Sunday morning, twenty-eight new members joined by Rev. Hugo after two weeks of meetings. Names include Robert Martin, Vada Been, Arline Hendrickson, Lowell Hendrickson, Pauline Hendrickson, Robert Heckard, Louise West, Mary Scott, Bobby Ringer, William Quinn, Elinore Martin, Mrs. Rufus Schaefer and Benjamin Been. Members by letter include Mrs. Benjamin Been and the Hendricksons. Additional families and individuals will be received later due to illness. The article also notes the Chicago Herald and Examiner’s new 16 page comic section debut and ongoing Sunday insertions.
No city primary or election in Delphi this year as a measure postponing city elections by one year passes both houses and awaits Governor McNutt signature. The bill, with an emergency clause, takes effect immediately and aims to save taxpayers about 300000 dollars. Delphi, population under 3000, becomes classified as a town under the bill.
Mrs. David Arthur died Monday morning at two oclock at her home in Jefferson township. She was a daughter of Frank Poncebaker. Survived by husband, father, one sister Mrs Frank Arthur of Logansport, and one brother Frank Poncebaker Jr of Patton. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Oak Grove church with Rev Weaver officiating. Burial followed at Riverview cemetery Monticello.
An announcement reports the marriage of William Haslett son of Mr and Mrs Lotie Haslett of Ockley and Miss Lillian Brafford daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Brafford of Indianapolis. They wed in Jeffersonville Indiana on January 14 and kept the ceremony secret until a later letter arrived.
Gov. Paul V. McNutt announced an extension of the deadline to purchase 1933 automobile licenses until midnight March 15. The delay is due to restrictions on bank withdrawals by many state financial institutions. Originally set for Feb 15, then deferred to March 1, the latest action means state police will not arrest drivers using 1932 licenses until March 16.
A letter from Howard Madara of Reading informs of the death of wife Mrs Nellie Madara at her Reading home on February 14. Born Nellie Deardorf in this city she was nearly seventy. She and Howard Madara celebrated their golden wedding last fall. Survived by husband a son Fred four daughters Olive and others, and sister Mrs Edward Crawford of Detroit. Burial occurred in Reading.
Nearly one hundred members attended the joint American Legion sessions of White and Carroll counties in the city Legion rooms. Posts from Monticello, Brookston and Chalmers joined, with meetings continuing through March as part of the ongoing membership drive. Doughnuts and coffee followed the business session, and next Monday’s meeting will be at Chalmers.
The Carroll County Red Cross reports 4788 ready made garments distributed to needy families since September, averaging 798 per month, plus 12000 yards of material. Weekly flour distribution totals 2442 pounds, with three carloads received and more planned. Red Cross rooms in courthouse open Saturdays for distribution.
Mr and Mrs Samuel Randolph celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary at their home southeast of Camden with about fifty guests including children, grandchildren and friends. The event honored their long life in Jackson township, with a Bible gift presented by their children and grandchildren via Rev L L Paul.
Funeral services for David Lee Gunyon son of Roy and Olive Gunyon were held Saturday afternoon at 1 30 o clock at the home of his grandparents Mr and Mrs Ray Lee in South Delphi. Born in Delphi July 6 1932 he is survived by his parents a brother Robert Gene and his grandfather. The body was taken to Fran.
Indiana bill assigns delegates to counties for the Eighteenth Amendment repeal convention. Carroll County, population 15 000, gets three delegates elected by petition with 500 names each. Nominees must declare stance before elections. Governor calls a May 20 election or joint May primary. Total delegates 414. Marion leads with 43, Lake 27, St Joseph 17. seven counties vote once each. County tallies include Carroll 3, Cass 4, Jasper 2, Pulaski 2, Starke 2, Benton 2, Tippecanoe 6, Kosciusko 4, Porter 3, Newton 1, Fulton 3, Marshall 4, White 3.
Robert Baum and Reid Schweiger form a partnership and open a garage in the rear of the post office building. The Baum and Schweiger garage will handle all auto repairs with a painting body top and glass department run by Mr. Baum. Schweiger brings years of Delphi experience.
Delphi's Oracles confront a grueling county meet at Flora this Friday and Saturday. They have won five straight sectional titles but must beat four teams to reach the finals, facing Camden and Flora in key clashes while hoping for a clear path to the tournament.
